Very cool. I've built two Lovetones, one had a cool enclosure design, and the other was a simple Sharpie on a bare box like this. They both sound great though! The ring modulator would probably be the last one I'd build of this series for the usefulness factor, but I know these would be just cool as the others!

I've been away from the forum for quite a while and just now saw this! Ouch. Hope things are going okay for you. As much as we don't like it, slow and steady wins the race when it comes to getting things back to normal.

General Questions / Re: Ibanez CS9 Lag Control Help
October 05, 2022, 01:46:47 PM
I was playing around with an old CS9 build I had that was giving me problems. Turns out, a wonky op-amp was giving me a ton of noise, but I swapped it out with a OP2134, and it was back up and running. One thing that bothered me about the build is I could hear the BBD noise fade out as the noise gate kicked in when I stopped playing. The noise gate circuit looks to have a lot in common with some of the envelope generators I've seen around the web. Those EGs have attack and decay controls roughly around where R50 and R51 are, respectively. I ended up swapping values on R51 to see if it would affect the decay time, and it worked! I dropped that 330k down as low as 12k and the BBD noise pretty much cuts out as soon as I stop holding a note. Just an interesting tidbit of discovery that someone else might want to look into or incorporate into another effect somehow.

Build Reports / Wow, I actually worked on some pedals!
October 03, 2022, 05:13:02 PM
It's been a while! I walked the dark path of guitar building and practically forgot that I enjoy building pedals too! I finally got around to put the finishing touches on some completed PCBs in my pile.

First up are the delays. One is Madbean's Total Recall, and the other is lectricfx's DC Echo. Both are incredible sounding delays, and I kept with my Brainy Ape/Planet of the Apes motif. The small delay is an old Madbean Dirtbag Delay...sort of...it was after Brian stopped making them and I was trying to teach myself Eagle, so I cloned the whole board! I had more spare time and energy back in the day, haha!

The other two are fuzzes. The Snafuzz is a rehouse of an older pedal I had and is based off the Clusterfuzz. The Sinister Calculus is an old version of Mask Audio Electronic's Black Math. Alec is a really cool guy, and I ended up with one of his PCBs as he was transitioning to SMD. The Black Math is pretty much a NY reissue Muff with an added boost stage and snazzy relay switching. Gnarly stuff! I tried to pay homage to his original enclosure work on this one.

I almost feel guilty because it only cost me $31.80 after tax!

That's even better!

How dare you trick me by enticing me with a pedal and then making me learn something! That artwork is extremely clean for how much detail there is in that image. Awesome job.

That looks very nice. The compactness is intense! Do I need another Memory Man build? No. Do I want one now? YES.

I have a DIY Rat around, but I don't play it very often because of the aforementioned harshness it can get. This seems like a pretty good alternative. I wonder if it would warrant trying other tone options like the stupid easy tone control or even a gyrator based EQ. Either way, great thought process, and great execution.

Build Reports / Re: Ibanez CS9

Looking sharp, as usual. I'm a fan of the CS9 after a friend asked me to build him one because apparently John Scofield uses one. This was right before they started up with the reissues, I believe.

This and the FL9 flanger seem to revolve around the same circuit, but the LFOs have different speed ranges and the feedback loop. I wonder if there could be a happy medium in the LFO to make a twofer out of this. Then you would have the LFO delay control as well. As for the feedback loop, I would make it to where you get positive or negative feedback by running through a JFET out of different legs like on the Lovetone flange. One last tweak would be to have a blend knob that goes from 100% dry to %100 wet like Madbean's Florist. On an unrelated note...I might have to fire up Eagle...no reason at all...

Very cool. It would be cooler if you were working on Eagle AND playing guitar at the same time!
