General Questions / Re: Diode clipping question
February 28, 2015, 08:38:17 PM
Diodes don't just clip the signal they have some parasitic capacity too, especially germanium.
I don't stock them really but my two handfuls of different types have a range between 100p - 600p.
This is what gives them a tonal character too in this setting as they don't have to add actively to the
clipping to change the sound this way.

I thought about a test set up for stomp switches, then I remembered this:

awhhh, shut up now. I just convinced myself to keep it below 18V ;)

Here's my short cut to insanity:
1) I hate compressors
2) did some DIY building for a while
3) build a compressor going through the effort of tweaking, making a vero, pedal design etc.
4) still hate compressors
5) oh, there's a new circuit, seems to be a compressor, interesting

Mods / Re: Wah with Germanium transistor?

For Q1 it might be interesting if you like it a little dirty and mess with it's gain (Re), for Q2 I wouldn't
bother, it's a buffer essentially and not worth the risk of extra noise thru leakage and the like.

Hexjibber, the beauty of doom, you nailed it with this.

sm57 aimed near the rim of the speaker   at some what of 45° and as close as possible  + a condenser mic ,centered, 1m  away from it where ever it sounds good in the room should do it for a 12" cab

General Questions / Re: Good solder in EU
May 02, 2014, 10:40:37 PM
If you melt the insulation pre-solder the tip, about 5mm should be enough. For the solder braid
go for the one with led, mother nature will squeal in awe but it melts so nicely.

for the first one listen to bands like albatros overdrive, for the second one john lee hooker.
Those are generic blues rock riffs met all over the place, can't be much of a help sorry...

I think the ernie ball is the most precise one, haven't tried it in a wah though
and if you like to rock it a lot (like in the shaft theme) it might be better to go
the crybaby route (quicker to handle and a better feel for the peak).

For the colour I'd go for hooker lips red, cause they know best how to form those vowels ;)

I had this "phenomenon" happening with a cd4049 and lm386 involved circuits
and a Fuzzface and I think it might be an oscillation and bias problem. Solved
it somehow by making the 9v to ground capacitor bigger and tweak the bias a little.

Build Reports / Re: Cherrybomb (Colorsound Overdriver)
February 23, 2014, 10:49:02 PM
Hi,
maybe this is old news, but C9 in the cherrybomb schematic is oriented in the wrong direction.

I stumbled upon this while hunting down the splatty noise in higher gain settings note decay. I always thought
it had to be something bias related, and tonight, after measuring the x-ed time, cursing on my transistors
I noticed there's a dc path to ground over Q1's emitter from this cap, so orientation has to be significant.
I compared it with what seems to be the original schem, swapped and turned the cap and all splattyness was gone...
