Hey folks! Lemme pick your collective brains for a minute here...

Waiting for my first ever smd board to arrive from ITead, I was reading up on soldering techniques. Needless to say, a hundred people will have two hundred opinions which continues to hold true when investigating the best soldering tip size.

What do you guys use for 0805 and 0603 and sot23 and such? Basically for anything one could possibly find in a pedal, I'm not talking gaming console rework and whatnot? Conical, chisel, straight, bent? Diameter?

Haha I love this thread!  ;D

Rully, I got my kits off ebay. 0805 resistors, 0603 resistors, 0805 caps, other smd bits and pieces as well.
The kit on your link doesn't state the resistor tolerance, there are 5% and 1% available so one needs to pay attention (been known to buy a few duds myself when I got careless  ::) ). I'm pretty well set for quite a few projects now. But there are a few parts that no kit contains and those aren't readily available, even on ebay. Hence all the commotion.

That skillet looks fun but I need this to take time so that I can unwind. That's my main purpose for doing this dance in the first place... ;D

Tech Help - Projects Page / Re: 3PDT Stomp Switch Help

It's easy to find out whether your switch is operational. Break out your DMM, set it to continuity and measure whether the appropriate pins get shorted/open when you flip the switch. It's easy to overheat the pin and have it fall out so if you have a soldering iron with temperature control consider upping the temperature, get in quick and get out quick.
If your upper middle pin is fried it would certainly cause the no sound issue as you'd have no connectivity to output jack. Does the LED ever come on?
I'm not sure I understand your description of the second part?

For the 47uF caps, you can get an 0805 cap for the one that goes after the 5V regulator, but they only go up to 10V.

I was just re-reading this and was wondering... since everything after the regulator is 5V anyways, wouldn't 10V be enough?
E.g. the 47u on pt2399 pin2 and 1u before the feedback pot and 1u on mix pot wiper etc? Does any of these places ever get a voltage that's >5V?

Yeah I just checked the listing for the same 0805 ceramic kit I got and it has 1u in x7r and 2u2 in y5v.

So for 10u and above (mostly 47 and 100 methinks) I'm gonna go with 16v tants. Thanks!!

I highly recommend using tantalum over SMT electros.  They fit a lot better in smaller enclosures.  They are also more reliable long term.  The downside is that they are more expensive.

Pick, about replacing electros with tants... Normally I don't use <25V rated caps, just to be on the safe side. The best I can find on tants are 16V. Is this a problem in normal 9V pedal application? Are tants more sturdy than electros when push comes to shove?

For the first time ever I didn't need anything from Tayda. Then there's talk of a coupon and whaddyaknow, I now have $40 in various parts coming in on a slow boat from China.  ::)

That's just the way Tayda rolls. There are a few of us whose act of completed payment triggers coupon code generation.

I'd love to but I'm simply unable to find a decent source that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I already have some electros, it'd be a shame to trash them, especially since I only build for myself and don't need to rely on their longevity.
Duly noted, though. I'll stock up on tants as soon as I find a reasonable supplier. Chromesphere, are you listening? How 'bout a smd tant kit?  ;D

Thanks Pick!

I've resigned to using smd electrolytes (there are 8 of them, space hoggers) for my v1 build (still testing Diptrace waters), but good to know.

^^^ I'm really surprised by that. I know European companies use surface-mount parts. Somebody over there has to be supplying them.

I'm sure there is but noone that I've found that caters to the <10000pcs crowd and doesn't pull a daylight robbery on me unless I live in the UK.
I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong here...  ;D
