Build Reports / Electronics At Work (Rump Roast)
March 23, 2011, 12:34:14 AM
This is my Rump Roast.  I use it as a dirty boost, mostly.  It's like having a dirty channel on my Blues Jr.  Had a mishap with the graphic, and the labels are a little off - I have that problem with printing from Photoshop -  but I'll re-do it at some point.  Thanks to the 1958 IBM advertising department for the graphic.  Thanks to Brian for another great project.

And the sloppy insides:

General Questions / Cherrybomb Question
March 20, 2011, 02:02:10 PM
Is the Cherrybomb a mostly direct clone of a Colorsound Overdriver?  The reason I ask is that I heard one of the ThroBack Overdrive Boost pedals which is also a derivative of the CSOD and it sounded really nice.  Seemed to have a lot of flexibility as far as it's range of cool tones.  I was wondering if anyone knew if the ThroBack was significantly different circuit-wise than the original Colorsound and could those mods be incorporated into a DIY pedal?

Thanks

Just a question - what do you mean by continuity?  The same voltage on either side?

Sorry if I sounded otherwise - I took no offense at all.  The irony was not lost on me.  I don't take anything that seriously.  This is a hobby and if I start going postal over a hobby, there's a problem.  I listen to everyone's comments.  They are always helpful.  I can solder these things on the board, but it's still magic to me what these things actually do and what's responsible for what.  But I am absorbing all the info.  Now I know why that diode is there!  Unfortunately, a diode was harmed in the process.

Thanks and yes, I can burn up components with the best of them.  I have a ways to go until I am considered a transistor tickler.  And clearly with ample reason

Would it be both of them?  The IN4001 is easy enough, but the BAT41 took a while to get from futurelec.  So the IC might be okay?

No, alas, no Communication Breakdown.  But funnily enough, that was the first song my cousin ever taught me oh so long ago.  But it was working, albeit without any Led Zeppelin, but it was sounding all splatty, so I was checking voltages.  I have had some grounding problems (of my own doing, I will add) with this project.  I have already heated up a battery testing it.  I mean it got real hot real fast.  I fixed that - it was a solder bridge - really small - going to ground.  But I'm not sure where the smoke was coming from this time.  Maybe I inadvertently grounded something out?  Anyway, I'm assuming that little electronic components probably don't thrive under excessive heat, so I am thinking about clearing the board  and starting over.  Or putting it aside and building something else.  We'll see.  Can I test the individual components (including the IC) to see whether I killed them?

Thanks

I'm guessing it's a bad thing when smoke comes out of your box when you are testing voltages with a DMM, right?

bigmufffuzzwizz - I tested the pot and it's working fine.  I'll start looking at all the values of the components and see if I can spot a mistake somewhere.  Thanks

I found part of the culprit.  Seems the output jack was making contact with the case of one of the pots when plugged in.  After swiveling it around and resoldering some of the components, suddenly it sounds alot better.  There used to be a volume change between the two tone modes that's gone now and it is not as bright as it was.  But I still don't get much change with the tone pot.  But, it's certainly getting better overall.  Just keep plugging away at it.  Thanks for everyones help

Okay.  That's cool.  At least I wired it up correctly.  I will try some combinations like you suggest.  And it's a good idea to socket them, as I would eventually destroy the board, no doubt.  The switch works great and the second setting has some serious stones.  I like it alot

As always, I appreciate your help.  I'm all set to build the T-Bagger!

I made the change and it did help, but it's still pretty bright.  I assume I may have another problem.  Question, though.  Is the Tone control supposed to work like a RAT filter (bright fully counter clockwise - 8 o'clock)?  If not I have it wired backwards or something.  Also, it seems to only have any effect at the last 10% of the pot travel.  The other 90% is just bright.

On the other hand, putting it ahead of my fuzz face is great.  It's a preamp section that controls the distortion.  And the FF plays nicely with it.  There are other pedals that really don't.

Anyway...

Thanks
