I was thinking of squirting the soap out of a soda bottle with a pinhole drilled in the cap.

My son is working on repainting a skateboard, and found this video.  Looks kinda cool.  Anybody tried it on a pedal?  I wouldn't be surprised if Drew wants his upcoming Fault Line painted to match his skateboard.

My condolences to your whole family, Brian.  My grandparents went in much the same way, years ago... one without the other just wasn't possible.

I've never heard of him/them, but found an EchoLogue pedal for sale used.  It fits my budget, and the pedal looks a lot more interesting than the Memory Toy or Carbon Copy I was considering.

What's the scoop?

Man... I like the Faultline (SFT) demos and think the "doomy" example is about as dirty as Jr will ever need to get.

But somehow, I think he'll like the Sabertooth.

I guess we apply the usual MadBEan project-selection methodology: BUY BOTH!  ;D

Looks nice, and ya gotta believe Bootsy, but Drew already has an envelope filter.  I traded a Recto Mod DS-1 for this DOD envelope filter, and let him use it.  It's reputedly the same one Flea uses, but who knows?

Also, just want to give you props for supporting local music stores  :)

It was my pleasure.  We only have one local store, it's been a foundation of the community for years (since my wife was a kid).  I've often thought about what I'd do if I found a big disrcepancy between the local price and MF, but so far I haven't had to make the choice.  My son WAS window-shopping MF online, but then found this bass, so we bought it.  I think it was marked down because it has a little tiny ding in the peghead, but I'm not complaining.  We got to try-before-buy, we both love the bass, and we got a great deal.  He'll put a lot worse ding in the peghead first time he turns around into the drum set with it.  SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL MUSIC STORE!!!

... my bass rig, which gets a crap ton more use then my guitar rig these days.

I hear ya, bro.  I was ecstatic when my kid told me he wanted to play the bass.  Take it from a guitar player, the last thing this world needs is another guitar player.

BTW, keep those pedal suggestions coming, and I'll point Drew in the direction of the on-line demos mentioned.

I supplied the black version component values to Brian, based on a schematic posted on Freestompboxes.org.  After filtering all the intarwebz gibber-jabber noise, I took that schematic to be accurate for the black E, which I believe is called the E6.

I have not, however, compared the two pedals.  There are a couple reasons I built the black version:

1) It's what Andy Summers used on the 2007 tour.  His basic dirty rhythm sound on that tour was the Eternity through a clean tube amp.  There was a picture in Guitar Player where your can just make out the black enclosure and brown knobs.

2) In general I like asymetrical clipping better than symetrical.  I'm an SD-1 guy as opposed to a TS guy.  I like the cliping a bit more ragged.  The blck version is a bit brighter, too, I believe.  I like it, but one friend I built a pedal for thought it was too bright.  I'm sending him a larger cap to help tone it down a bit.

However, I think my Nutrino is a bit light on gain, it's usually enough, but sometimes I want more.  I might try a 500K gain pot and see if it's better.

My 13-year old just graduated today... from a short-scale SX Jazz Bass to a really nice Squier Classic Vibe Precision.  Got a smokin' deal on it at the local music store - no need to resort to Musician's Fiend or GC.

Anyway, I've been grabbing pedals for him when I see a good deal - so far he has an DOD envelope filter that I got in a trade and a Loco Box (funky, obscure line, do a web search) phaser that's really cool and cost only $19 (it's a restoration project-in-progress).

I know he'd like a dirt box - among other things, he's into the same modern metal and most 13-year-olds.  What Madbean projects would work well for bass, either in their standard form of with some tweaks to optimize them for the low register?  Something Big Muff Pi-ish perhaps?  Hit me up with some ideas - kid's getting to be a pretty good bass player, and I want to keep his interest up.

Build Reports / Re: Pedal Virgin - Neutrino
June 20, 2010, 12:59:57 AM
Hey, Andy.  I hate to see a Nutrino getting no "reply" love, so I'll jump in.  Nice first build.  My search for a primary overdrive ended when I built mine.

I know what you mean about the interaction between your Line 6 and the dirt pedal.  As good as modelling amps sound, the one area they really fall down is the guitar/amp interaction part.  I have a little Vox Amp Plug that sounds exactly like a Marshall with a 4-12 cab, but when I run a boost or overdrive, it doesn't react like the real thing.
So, your first DIY pedal is working.  What's next?

Open Discussion / Passing on my genetic defect
June 15, 2010, 06:21:31 PM
I've been out of town on business for three weeks.  The other day, I recieved the following in an e-mail from my 13-year-old, bass-playing son:

"...a couple of my friends and I started a band.  And Alec (our guitarist) doesn't have any pedals. Do you think we could make a distortion pedal for him? "

Hahahahaha!   First band, and it's not "What songs will we play?", it's "What kind of pedals can we use?"

Years ago (like, 30 years ago) a was a guitar->cord->amp guy, but then guys like Pat Travers, Alex Liefson, and Andy Summers got me intersted in effects, and it kinda snowballed since then.

My chain starts with a pair of Tele's - a Nashville  w. Duncan Stacks for "Fender" sounds, and a mutt Schecter goldtop PT w. MIM maple neck and Duncan 59s for "Gibson" sounds.

Then, my homemade pedalboard:

  • Boss DS-1 (modded to approximately Monte Allums Recto specs) for it buffer, and special high-gain needs
  • MXR 74 RI Phase 90
  • Madbean Nutrino (for my main overdrive/solo tone)
  • Boss CE-2
  • Boss BF-2 (MIJ)
  • Boss DD-3
  • Boss TR-2 (w. volume mod)

I'll be replacing the DS-1 soon with a redish/pinkish Slow Lorus called Rosie the Rat.   Also, I plan to build my incoming Fat Pants board into an old Cry Baby shell and put it in front of the board as a boost/volume pedal.  Finally, I'm thinking about filling the one remaining spot on my board with a Memory Toy or some other delay, just to give me another "preset" delay sound.

That all drives my amp, a DIY Marshall 18 Watter clone, built into an old Bogen PA chassis, and housed in a homemade 1-12 combo patterned after the old Univox "Group B" amplifiers - those two-tone blue mutants from the early 70s.

My "sound" is basically late 70s/early 80s new wave/brit pop kinda stuff - Andy Summers, James Honeyman-Scott, Robbie McIntosh, Johnny Marr, etc.  It's taken years to get where I am, but I love my rig.

Fortunately, "gear ho" is apparently genetic, and it's time to start working on building my 13-year-old son a killer bass rig.  DIY GAS is never-ending.

Build Reports / Re: Krunkee

Ha-ha... I have one of those red/pink Small Bear boxes - got it for free, a bit scratched and without a back plate.  I decaled it to read "Rosie the Rat" and I'm using it for my upcoming low-budget Slow Lorus build.  Minor problem with the clear coat slighlty wrinkled the finish, too, so it's be ugly but sound good.

Nice Krunkee BTW.  I've played a real CB, and it's a good box.

In short, the Eternity is a Tube Screamer for folks who don't like Tube Screamers.  More specifically, for those who don't like the typical TS mid-hump.  The "E" has broader, flatter response.  Actually, my Nutrino is more SD-1-ish, since it uses asymetrical clipping.

See reply #3 for my post-gig comments on my Nutrino here:
http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=12.msg360#msg360

The thing that got me interested was the Police's Certifiable CD/DVD set from the 2007 Tour.  I loved Andy Summer's tone on that tour, and after much research came to the conclusion that his dirty rhythm sound was mostly a black Eternity through his Custom Audio (CAE) amps' clean channel.

The Nutrino/Eternity is not for everybody.  It can be very bright, fizzy if you're not careful.  However, that "glass" thang translates to clarity and dynamics.  The brightness does not imply "thin"; its low end is tight and chunky, but not real fat like an OCD.  With a clean amp, the Eternity/Nutrino may no have as much gain as some like.  I use mine with an already-crunch Marshall clone, so it provides enough gain to be my main solo boost/overdrive (but I'm not a metal head, my dirt needs are modest).

I'm building a Fatpants into an old Cry Baby shell to make a combination volume/boost pedal.  The Fatpants calls for a 50KB pot, but standard wah pots only come as low as 100K, either audio or ICAR, I assume.  I don't want to get involved in adapting a normal pot, drilling and pinning the shaft, etc.  Also, off-the-shelf wah pots are better sealed and will last longer.  So, I'm stuck with available wah-pot values.

OK...  so if you had to put a 100K pot in the circuit, would you change any other component values, most notably C4 or R6?

Let's go deeper... let's say you're also putting in a normal pot with the footswitch selecting "knob" or "pedal".  Would you make the normal pot match the slightly off-spec 100K pedal, or use the stock 50K value?

My Small Bear order awaits your wisdom and/or crackpot opinion. ;D
