Beautiful etch.  I'll dig up pryde's tutorial and give it a shot.

Thanks! I was going to post a link in my original post, but I had downloaded the PDF a while back when I stumbled upon it and lost the original link.

I thought I better start simple - trying it for myself gave me a whole new appreciation for the crazy intricate etches I see here!

Thanks! And thank you for the awesome tutorial! I had put off trying etching until I came across that one - it was the help I needed to push me into giving it a go!

Build Reports / Ninety Ninety (NomNom)

So I built this one a while ago omitting the Nom switch so as to leave it in 'Script' mode the whole time. I did an alcohol ink finish which just didn't hold up to gigging (I don't think I did a good job finishing it to be honest though, I had lots of problems with it). I decided I'd refinish it, and while I was at it, decided to add the Nom switch.

I thought I'd try my hand at etching because I hate that newly-finished-pedal-don't-want-to-gig-it feeling. I started over with a blank enclosure and used a tutorial I found here, although I can't remember who by. The one in the example is the 'Subtlety Drive'. Anyway it was an excellent tutorial and worked great (using photo paper) once I got the paper off. I had to do 4 attempts though because every time I tried to remove the paper, loads of the toner flaked off. I finally realized I didn't think I was getting the box hot enough for long enough so I fixed that and it worked much better.

This was also my first time starting with a totally blank enclosure and drilling everything. Took the advice I saw here repeatedly and purchased some step bits, and was surprised at how much of a non-event it was even using a hand drill.

Special thanks to TreeSlayer for the trimpot that somehow evaded me on my order!

Here are some pics:

A post on DIYSB reminded me of how difficult it is to tell the difference between different types of distortion, or even whether it's a real amp.

So...

;D

That's the first thing that popped in my head too

Another thing to consider is that you could probably get a similar (not exact) Sherwood from ReRanch, and it would probably look fine since the headstock and body are never close enough to be directly compared.

You could always take the paint right off, add your decal, clear coat it back up and just do without the matching headstock.

Yea I'm not sure of the order or process they use, especially on Squiers. Unfortunately, the fact it's over a metallic finish makes it even more difficult. If you rub into that paint even a tiny bit, you'll never get rid of the scuff in the finish because you will have disturbed the way the metallic particles lay, and therefore reflect the light. On a solid color you'd get away with it, but that's not the case with metallics.

The only trouble with sanding it is that if it is under the clear coat, as they are on Japanese Fenders, and the clear coat has yellowed over time, you'll have to take it off very evenly or the color will look patchy. This is obviously more of a concern on lighter shades but it's something to bear in mind.

Because it's fun.

Also, as an aside, what do you guys think of this reviewer? Every video I see him in, he seems like he can't be bothered to be there. Too cool for skool.  ???

So Reverb put this on Facebook, mentioning the color changing crystal ball. I had to check it out. In the video at first it's just an amber color with some blue/purple thrown in responding to his playing, so I thought the amber light was always on and it just added another LED or something, but then a bit later the amber goes out completely and it's all blues and purples. How did they make that happen? It's a trip.

Open Discussion / NomNom and Magnavibe two-in-one?
March 06, 2015, 12:13:33 AM
I have a populated NomNom, and was thinking of knocking together this Magnavibe: http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.com/2012/01/bigfoot-fx-magnavibe.html

I thought they might be cool sharing an enclosure (vibrato into phaser maybe?) but I didn't know if there was anything glaringly obvious that would make this a bad idea? I'm not well versed in the rules or things to avoid with two-in-ones to make sure there's no weird noise or problems. I thought I'd ask you far more knowledgeable chaps!

Thanks!
