Mods / Egghead/Gainster clipping diodes
June 22, 2013, 03:04:10 PM
I've built a tagboard Gainster clone and I love it so much I bought 2 Egghead pcbs and will make one stock and the other I'll socket the diodes just to see what other options sound like.

Has anyone already tried this?

Very very clean. Nice work.

How did you do the graphics?

'bout that international shipping, is it ok to make more than one order?

edit: perhaps I'm just overly cautious. All orders? OK, I'm in. ;D

Yeah man, I like that a lot.

Ground to the screw hole? Looks like something I'd do ;D

If I didn't know better, I'd say the Reverend Billy G. was using a nasty fuzz here as opposed to amp gain alone. Are my ears on the right track? Sounds almost like my Wolfshirt! I'm liking the chorus on the solos as well.

I'm sure he has been a Foxx tone machine user so you may not be far off with the wolfshirt.

Nice work and your review makes building one of these very tempting.

I think I might have to see what I can knock up in eagle.

I'm terrible in these situations, I never know what to say.

I'll be sending you good thoughts and positive waves.

I didn't notice it with my build, I was more concerned with the lining up the A B C.

Just make sure you soldered it onto the correct side of the board  ;D

Leo Kottke... i just scored front row tickets to see this obviously alien guitar player.

I love me some Kottke. Great musician and songwriter and a funny guy too.

How Do I? Beginner's Paradise. / Re: IC Insertion

When I'm not doing this...

I hold the chip on its side so one set of legs is flat on a table top. I then carefully press down until the legs are more at a right angle to the chip body. I then flip it over and do the same to the other side. This works especially well for the 14 and 16 pin chips.

I do this...

I usually put in one row a very small bit so that the IC is at an angle, then push all the pins of the other side at the same time with my tweezers until they pop in. Then push down the entire IC

but with my fingernails/tips...probably not 'best practice'  ;D

Fine for guitar tonepots. Should be ok in amps, Mustards were used a lot back in the day but check the voltage rating on them. Tropical fish are more tricky. The colour coding will show you the voltage (a multimeter will do the rest ;D ) but check out this page.

In my experience tropical fish can sometimes be quite fragile and I've had a few crack and some completely fall apart. Mustards are pretty robust though.
Both look awesome in fuzzes and wahs, still not sure if they sound any better than modern types but certainly no worse.

As the Dutchman says, a whole can of worms indeed.
Some of my favourite guitarists use solid state amps but the main thing I love about tube amps is the way you can push them with a boost or overdrive. The way your tone fattens without necessarily getting dirtier.
It seems to me that tube amps are not only more dynamic but they let me get more out of my pedals.
Over to you...

Edit: Similar to you, I notice a bit of clock noise on my Zero Point Micro through my little Marshall then through a software amp sim.
