Open Discussion / Powered Breadboard
January 16, 2015, 05:28:36 PM
For those of you who are big breadboarders, Circuit Specialists have a pretty nice looking powered breadboard for $89 right now...

http://www.circuitspecialists.com/powered-protoboard-system-with-two-digital-panel-meters.html?utm_source=pbb-272a&utm_medium=email_campaign&utm_campaign=emc_00011&utm_source=Circuit+Specialists+Newsletter&utm_campaign=33a48e952a-EMC_00011_16_Jan_2015&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_dd242259e3-33a48e952a-52918557

I don't have any experience with it, but I have one of their digital soldering stations and it was the best investment I made, and only cost I think $35 at the time, and came with a free DMM.

Take a look at the Boneyard as well; that switches between two pots for the gain.

This is my favorite way to do it; it's not much work, and the board stays the same size.  I did this with 1776's Britannia and it's pretty dang cool, since the gain on that one is kind of a treble booster.  Pretty flexible too, you can use different values or tapers for the pots, or use it for, say, two different delay times or tremolo settings.  Simple and works for all kinds of circuits.

It all depends on the circuit I suppose. Sometimes diming the gain or level doesnt quite get the boost where you want it tonally. I know J.Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. has a switch that just bypasses the volume pot for full output on his Big Muffs for his lead tone.

I figured it was too general of an observation for an ic circuit but thought I'd ask. I've thought about the multiple volume pot too but liked the freq pot on the Tim.

Open Discussion / Adding a Boost circuit to overdrive
January 16, 2015, 01:26:39 AM
Simply asked, is a adding a boost circuit to an overdrive as simple as a switch, pot, resistor,-> feedback loop <- cap to VB?

I'm just looking at the differences of the Tim and the Timmy and was just wondering. I couldn't seem to find anything on Beavis regarding this without going into a transistor boost circuit. I'm looking for something that I could add into say the sparkplug possibly. obviously values would need to be tuned.

Any links to additional resources I missed? Beavis and geofex turned up empty.

I wonder if the baristas at Starbucks would care if you brought in your iron :)

Has anyone actually used on of the coldheat irons? Maybe they'd be ok with that.

HMMMM how bad can it be for 266?

With monoprice, it's totally up in the air.  Some stuff they make is really nice, other products, not so much.

I haven't had any bad experiences with them so far, but I'm not ready to shell out for a tube amp from them. haha.

I can say the hifi headphones I got from them are amazing. Especially considering the $20 price tag. My 4ch snake is great. TV's are still attached to the wall...

I just thought it was interesting. They have a good sized collection of pedals and guitars too. Intriguing.

Open Discussion / Re: Proper tools for tightening nuts
February 21, 2014, 08:54:10 PM
I'm only making pedals for myself, so i dont worry too much about scratching it. They are gonna get banged up pretty good by me anyways.

I just use wrenches. The toughest part of it for me is holding the switches, jacks, pots etc on the other side while tightening them.

For me... this week is all about St. Paul & the Broken Bones. Saw them last summer at Muscian's Corner in Nashville, and their live show is awesome. Their full-length finally dropped this week and it does not disappoint.

Ian, have you listened to Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears? They are a fantastic live show.

Not sure if this should go in tech help or mod, but i'll ask the question....

Assuming I'm reading correctly, if I wanted to add the soft switch to the 2012 ed. board, I can just add a 3n3 on a switch to ground and piggyback Level Pot pin 3?

It's just a passive low pass filter yeah?

Anything else I should do to the 2012 now? Parts subs?

Before i give you a tip, lemme just say my builds are atrocious compared to most the guys on here. But I found one thing that helps a lot is If u have a drilling template you plan on using, First drill into a price of 3/4" pine. Then You can get your pots and switch wiring lengths right. Then you just have in/out and power left.

I'm all over the place but I've been pretty into iron chic, elway, sundowner, and  red city radio lately. Reminds me of about 15 years ago. (And I'm 29. Lol)

I just got "the greatest story ever told" by the Lawrence arms on vinyl and I'm loving it. One of my favorite albums.

Open Discussion / Re: Pedals and Beer...
February 14, 2014, 11:27:41 PM
I agree to a point, but the craft beer industry is a little bit more personal. With local brew pubs and community events, its a little different than the pedal industry. There are faces to beer industry, but not as much to the pedal business, ie... most pedal companies don't have a brick and mortar storefront.

But definitely an interesting comparison none-the-less.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the next great pedal maker to make me winter overdrive with star anise and coriander.

EDIT:
I just read this yesterday, so here is a fantastic article about Ken Grossman and Sierra Nevada. Having gone to school in Chico, I can tell you that Ken and that Brewery have done A LOT for the community (mostly by supplying cheap, delicious beer to it's twenty somethings). Ken has a much more interesting approach to the upswing in craft brewing, where he is embracing, and even grooming some of the smaller artisan craft brewers. I also homebrew, because I DIY everything.
