Build Reports / Re: Pig Butt - 1st Pedal Build
June 01, 2020, 03:59:39 AM
Seriously, my first build was a rats nest of wires, tilted components, big splashes of brown flux, and... a non-working circuit. (Not to mention a plain metal enclosure of course)

Very very well done!

...this is gonna be a weird week.
Wow! I envy you if things are only now starting to become weird there.

That's actually part of it. Our Governor acted so ludicrously toothless during the quarantine that nearly nothing actually changed (Gyms were just about the only enforced closure) that now, when a couple windows got broken in the rich part of town, he comes out with this... it raises some eyebrows.

So, my state has implemented a Curfew, 8pm to 5am, for this week.

I only learned about this when trying to walk into my local grocery store at 7:45 and a cop at the door told me they were closing in a couple minutes. While the order does allow for essential travel (including to/from businesses, getting food, etc), most businesses in town are closing early.

As someone who does the vast majority of my shopping after sundown (It's Arizona, the sun is evil) this is gonna be a weird week.

Ok, first dumb question, is anything shorting out against the back of the pot?

Given how a pot is constructed, I'd imagine a damaged/broken one to go open circuit (like blowing a track off a board). I could be wrong though, things can break in odd ways.

Have any pics of the board? Perhaps someone here can spot something.

The color scheme makes me think of Welcome to Night Vale, I dig it.

I'll stick one next to my CryoCrunchy overdrive! (The best clipping occurs with the diodes chilled by liquid nitrogen, obviously)

Started on Just Cause 4 (it was 80% off, on Steam.)

So far, it's a bit tedious, and feels like it's trying to be Far Cry, not Just Cause.

JC4 was so disappointing after the ludicrous fun of 3. Sure the balloons are a fun little gimmick, but on virtually every other front it's a step back. Graphics are worse, voice acting is less impressive, the story is more mediocre, and the gameplay loop has taking a step back to be less involved. I still go back to mess about in 3 occasionally, but 4 got deleted off my drive a day after I finished it.

Sounds like you didn't have a resistor on the LED (or if you did, it may have shorted somewhere).

Could you provide a picture of the device?

My first pedal board (and only board I've ever actually 'assembled') was just some scrap wood from a pallet and some screw-down metal hanger strapping to hold things in place. Cost like 5 bucks and I probably could've beat someone over the head with it and not dislodged anything.

But as for these Gravity Boot things, it looks like they're using these things: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/10-PACK-Neodymium-Disc-Countersunk-Hole_60712818925.html (assuming the facebook pic is indicative)

Made another batch of chicken soup tonight. It's not as pretty as most of the stuff in this thread, but it's cheap and filling  ;D

Also, the leftovers always make me giggle a bit, as there is so much gelatin in it the stuff sets up solid. Rather than ladling up a portion, you need to cut a cube out of the dish and it jiggles delightfully.

The Witcher is ... ok. ?.

Basically. It's a fairly generic high fantasy plot buoyed up by a couple great performers (honestly the next season could just be 8 hours of Jaskier and Geralt bickering and I'd consider it worth watching).

Making chicken soup tonight. De-boned my freezer yesterday (the carcasses of a couple rotisserie chickens), baked a few leg quarters and saved those bones as well. Tossed in the InstantPot for a couple hours with some random veg and herbs. Strain out the chunks and let it sit long enough for the fat to rise to the top. (or stick it in the fridge until you want to use it)

Tonight, fry up some onion and garlic until just starting to color, add a few stalks of celery, a couple carrots, and a potato or two. Add a quart of stock and simmer until the veggies are tender (along with any additional herbs/spice if you wish). Toss in a couple handfuls of egg noodles (because I have them on hand and may as well use them) along with the saved meat, and let it simmer until the noodles are done. Consume as needed.

On the plus side, with a decent internet search if been able to figure out how to rebuild an oven and a washer and dryer.  But cars...nope...it'll be cheaper if I don't touch it.

The thing is, my former roommate was a master mechanic (had a certificate to that effect and everything) so I got real spoiled about being able to pay for car repair in beer. I also got at least vaguely competent about knowing what did what inside my car, so I could do some simple stuff.... at least until my apartment complex put out a notice that car repair in the parking lot would be a eviction worthy offense.

Granted, this time around, 500$ of that price is just parts alone (turns out finding the brains for a 23 year old car is a wee bit tricky) but still, labor costs suck.

General Questions / Re: Solder Flux: Which Type?
April 24, 2020, 03:41:17 AM
Rosin flux is fine. Bit of a sticky mess, and it's not the prettiest, but it works wonderfully.

The only stuff you want to avoid is the "acid flux" found in plumbing solder (and flux sold for plumbing use). That stuff is quite corrosive and will eventually eat through pcb traces (and may be conductive if I recall correctly).

Personally I use "no clean" flux solder, just because I got a good deal on it. Works fine, but doesn't smell as nice as rosin, so take that for what it's worth.
