Build Reports / Powerful Pedalboard Amp in a 1590B
October 03, 2020, 02:54:40 PM
I was looking for a versatile, yet simple pedalboard amp. This one uses a TDA7266M IC and a simplified ROG Tonemender as a preamp / tone stack. Controls are Treble (bottom right), Mid (bottom left), Bass (top left) and Volume (top right). The tiny hole below the controls can be used to contol the overall preamp volume (there's a trim pot below that). The thing runs on 12 volts, but 9 volts work as well if enough current can be provided by the power supply.

Soundwise, I could not be more happy - the tonestack is effective, the overall volume is way to loud to practice.

All that in a 1590B package with top mounted jacks.

I had to bend the TDA7266M to fit in the box, which I did before soldering it on the pcb. I put a little piece of wood between the pin rows, put it in a vice and bent the plastic part back. Unfortunately, the footprint for the TDA from the internet had too tiny holes to push the pins through. They went in, but not through. Not a big deal.

I have a few PCBs left and can provide a BOM and even a drill template. PM me, if you are interested.

Get a board for just the postage :-)

It runs on 9 Volts. One battery will last forever (it's completely off when the trigger is not pressed). However, there are tiny boards with micro usb jacks and voltage converters on it, so we can turn any old cell phone battery into a rechargable 9 Volt (or whatever) source, which can be charged with Standard (5v) usb chargers. Pretty cool stuff. I got that stuff here and will explore that next (Not for the Ray Gun, but maybe other pedals)

Just a quick one... need to practice how to use it properly.

And here is a detail shot of the PCB. I have four left and I would give them away for free (except for the postage). The only condition is, that you have to show that you built it. PM me, if you are interested.

It's done. I bought an old solder gun on ebay and we brought tiny aluminum champaign bottles from our vacation. Other parts are an old XLR Plug, aluminum tubing and an old closet knob. What a fun project. It's mighty loud and even has some cool blinking lights ;-)

General Questions / Re: Digital Delay Circuit Design
August 27, 2020, 02:52:06 PM
Well... technically, any PT2399 or FV-1 based delay is a digital delay. It would be helpful to show the folks here what you have planned so far, so people can check, if an existing design would work...

I built a ray gun circuit once. Only problem is, I was going for a Dr. Quack.

That sounds quite convincing as well :-). Please reverse engineer asap.

I will make a PCB for myself and give away the remaining boards. Here is the schematic with my modifications:

Home from vacation, I breadboarded the circuit. I did some changes (pot tapers, ranges etc.) to it and will post an updated schematic once I have finalized it. Here is how it sounds now. It does not create all the sounds of the original ray guns, but does the most recognizable pew-pew-sound pretty well. Tiny remaining problem is, that it takes some time to initially charge up the capacitors (twice in the very beginning of the video). I can live with that, unless somebody has an idea how to pre-charge the caps.

I did some research about the effect, and found some funny stuff, which I thought I'd share:
- the original was created using the modulation lexicon PCM-41 digital delay
- Stevens says, that modified toy ray guns himself to be able to control the oscillator speed
- He also says, that these aren't made any more, so he searches for similar ones on ebay
- Somebody seems to sell clones of these for 149 $  :o
- There is a stompbox "Loud Button Electronics WTF Distortion/Low-Frequency Oscillator", that can create some similar sounds

Here are some sources: The links point to the right position in the videos (so you don't have to listen to the complete Vince Neil Song  ;)):

Build Reports / Steve Stevens Ray Gun
August 13, 2020, 11:44:45 AM
It's been at least a year since I searched for a ray gun (circuit) that sounds similar to Steve Steven's signature "Rebel Yell" sound (we play that in a cover band). They are impossible to find, most of them are way too digital/modern sounding and cannot be tuned (in terms of LFO rate).

IT seems, my search is over - check this out!

Here is another one with the same circuit.

Setting up a traditional blues / jazz board for a telecaster / matchless Spitfire Combination, that does not need a lot... Zendrive, King of Tone, Aion L5 (Clean Channel), Tap Tempo Tremolo, Alter Ego delay, Hall of Fame Reverb

Not really a Dr. Boogie, but a BSIAB/Okko Mashup, that I did... Just as an inspiration:

Open Discussion / Re: Lets talk about strat pickups
April 29, 2020, 03:17:32 PM
I have modified Pickguards, and while it's doable with a lot of patience and swearing, I cannot recommend it (unless you have to do it for a customized pickguard). To get it right, you need a template and a router. I use a 3d printer for templates of pickups and you have to go very slowly, if you dont want the material to chip.

I am glad to hear that, congrats! Seems like the delay Sounds were Not loud enough or the noise Level was too high for taprecise to measure. Cool that it works now!
