General Questions / Re: Single vs Double Op-Amp
April 07, 2022, 03:13:21 AM
Sometimes you want two singles instead of one double. The first thing that springs to mind is when one opamp is part of the LFO section, the other is a gain-y part of the audio section, and in proximity, the LFO opamp can be heard in the audio output (TICKTICKTICKTICK).

The other time is when it plain-out makes the physical PCB layout easier and cleaner.

Phwoar.

As for the regulator, for that much heat I'd be tempted to run wires and bolt it to the enclosure itself with TO220 insulating stuff in between.

Good stuff!

If an egg yolk is cooked all the way through, I don't even want it

There is cooked, and there is food poisoning.

People also get angry with me with regards to how I like my steak. Cooked, not raw.

Tasty! What transistor did you use for the Cosmo? IME, it's very dependant on that part as to the end sound...

For the delay, I'm picking that you tested it with your own 3005 chips? :)

Ah, of course... I keep forgetting about the state of Georgia! (My first mental association is the movie "Goldeneye", for some reason, and Eastern Europe.)

... it's based in Georgia, a former Soviet republic, and somehow it's bringing valve production back to North America?

Yay for new valve factories, especially in countries that are not sanctioned, but I'm confused over this.

Not sure I agree on the board colour for difficulty idea.

On the one hand, a black board means hard to read traces, which is a horrible thing to do on a Genius level PCB.

On the other hand, hard to read traces is not a nice thing to do to new builders.

Also I'm trying to actually give a crap about this. I've used the same tube amp as my main amp for twenty years. I replaced the tubes exactly one time, well over a decade ago and it still sounds great.

I've had more than one conversation with techs that don't get why people replace their tubes so much. Their thinking was if the amp is working well then don't mess with it. I tend to agree with that mentality.

My understanding is that preamp valves last just about forever, while power valves (EL34, KT88, that sort of thing) do wear out over time if you thrash the pants off them on a regular basis.

You talked me into it, Brian.

(... not that he had to try very hard.)

... my old World of Warcraft mousepad and chipboard desktop aren't what all the cool kids like these days? :(

More seriously, that's a pretty tight improvised lightbox! I like it :D

Interesting. I built a JMK Lunar Module, but it really didn't do much for me... the Cosmopolitan, on the other hand, was love at first sight.

Maybe I need to have another go at a LM.

General Questions / Re: Inventory

Break it down into categories, and then into subcategories. Grab a few big plastic bins to help with this, and some big plastic bags to go into the bins.

Similar to how you eat an elephant -- one bite at a time.

I'd advise you to see a foot specialist, as well -- if you have odd feet, then they can make custom inserts for your shoes, to make standing for long periods easier. Also, when you do sit after eight to ten hours of standing, a nice foot bath of hot water (as hot as you can stand) with a generous amount of table salt mixed in is absolutely wonderful.

Now Juan is making me think of manually cutting those notches into 5.25" floppies to turn them into double sided discs. (Only rich people had those custom notch-cutting devices.)

Never liked Spiderman, much, it always seems to have an ongoing plot of "Protagonist Gets Shat On Constantly."

I do like this pedal, however! I had to go back and study the panel, as my simple little brain went "Four transistors! Normal Big Muff!" :)
