Build Reports / Stagefright
August 02, 2017, 08:56:12 PM

Finally finished this thing after spending a week trying to figure out a problem with IC1.  The socket was bad.

I used envirotex on the artwork, it worked great, but I think I should've waited another day for it to dry because when I screwed in the LED holder it made a ring around it.

Any how it sounds amazing! Build one if you need a great sounding Phaser.

Thanks madbean!

With machined pin sockets, I've found it's best to either go super-spendy, or to not bother and get leaf sockets.

Plus most ICs have square legs, so they make more contact than they do in round holes :)
Another ring of knowledge added to my chain.

Your absolutely right!.. Wouldve saved me a week of mind boggling brain fry!

Try this - remove IC1. Now measure the voltage on pin5 in the socket. Are you getting 4.5v there? If not, R53 or R54 is the problem. If you do get 4.5v there and then it drops when you re-insert IC1, then something connected to the VB rail is off (refer to the schematic for all the components connected to VB).

Thank you for taking the time to help!

After pulling out the IC and looking at everything one more time with a magnifying loop.  I found the culprit to be, just my luck, a faulty hole in the IC socket

Pulled the old one out and replaced it, and it fired right up! Thanks for the help

Reflowed all my solder, and went thru the schematic about 5 times.

Getting strange voltages on my stage fright.  Replaced TL074 with a new IC, still no love.  My rate LED doesnt light up, but when I touch any probe to pin 5 of the TL074 IC1, it begins to strobe.  Any ideas?

I wonder what would happen if you pour a thick layer of envirotex over that?... Might be cool

Yes I had a problem with those too... Get rid of them

Man at those prices, it's almost worth a shot to try winding your own. Wonder if the ratios and whatnot for this particular can are floating around out there.

Maybe.. but it wont be the same as the original.. There's a metal called Molybdenum that they used to make these with, I guess its outlawed now, but if you want to have that vintage sound you gotta use the Old Stock... Ive built some DI Boxes with Cinemag transformers and they sound amazing.  But not the same as the wolfbox.

I had it powder coated at a place that does car rims in Glendale.  And the lettering I had Laser etched at a place in LA called thebuildshop.com

I sniped the transformer on ebay for $170.00, I lucked out, the week after one went for 250 and before that 350.  You just gotta be patient and wait.  There are a couple places online that have a few but they want 375.00 for one.  Im not paying that much for it, ill wait for ebay.  I wanna build another one actually.

After a year of searching for the elusive Triad Magnetics A-11/12j transformer, I finally got one on ebay!  Been wanting to build this for a long time, finally got it done.

Ed Wolfrum the engineer for Motown and United Sound Studios in Detroit, posted the schematic on his web page after having a falling out with ACME Electronics.

I dont play Bass as good as James Jamerson, but it sounds amazing!

I just replaced CA3080 in my kraken.  It was zapped.  I replaced it with LM3080 and now it works like a charm.
