Thanks. I had a Morely power boost/wah and I sold it, just too big. Didn't seem to suck tone. Was too big though!

:)
Maybe this could be simplified and shrunk to a wah pedal size.

PS- just watched a Knopfler doc, was interesting. Cool guy.

I have used these for years and a friend also. All I ever had to do was solder a power jack once and as for the switches, just stretching the spring out a bit was all it ever took to get them operating like new again.

I repaired a DM4 faulty footswitch. It's just like the DL4.

They are set up odd. The footswitch itself is actually not a switch at all. It's spring-mounted plunger that taps on a momentary tactile switch mounted on the PCB. Eventually the plunger wears out and doesn't hit the  tactile anymore. And you can't buy those pluger-switch things anywhere that I know of.

So what I did was desolder/remove the tactile switch and just mounted a standard SPST momentary footswitch on the enclosure. I wired the footswitch in the same manner the tactile was. And it worked great.

Oh man I am totally into it. I love the DL-4 but really dislike certain aspects of it. Overall the sound is cloudy, etc.. I love the ease of use and preset ability. Looper is great and easy to use. It really is a good product. Lazy as hell of them to not update it ever though IMO.
I am also a big looping fan- I have Jam Man (orig w maxed zip dimm chips or whatever), Echoplex digital pro, Eventide Timefactor, etc.
If it did same thing as DL4 but with better sound and some tape-like adjustment abilities (TimeFactor is awesome at this- octaves, 5ths, 7ths, smooth- all non destructive and just like tape) I would be sold.
I am on list for couple of these also so me and a bandmate can make synced loops. You can have either one be master without having to touch them- so either one of us could start a loop and the other can make synced loops afterwards.

Thanks much, will check with Steve at SB. Hopefully it is not the same taper as what is already in mine.
That is really strange you can reverse things and it still works! I noticed the volume had more of a bump at very beginning.
I guess in reality it starts to make sense the way they did it as I don't want a jump at the beginning either- so if you smooth the start, you have to put the rest of the sweep somewhere thus the bulge at the end.
Hmm, without a chip and different type of sensor I'm not sure how you could stretch the volume sweep out farther but with the same throw of the pedal. Maybe optical sensor and a chip or something where it could read not just 360 degrees but is measuring using steps. That original device to measure the speed of light comes to mind- the eyeball would be the sensor, and some sort of circuitry to read the pulses and adjust the vol.

E-mail Steve at Smallbear and ask him what the taper is.

Before you spend any money, though, swap your input and output plugs (plug your guitar into the output). ;)

I can't stand the non linear sweep. There is a jump when you approach toe down. There is a small switch which smoothes it out a little but still drives me nuts. Contacted them they only offer replacement parts. Any suggestions for replacement pot that would allow smooth and linear volume sweep?
Thx

The "ring" in the term comes from the way the diodes are arranged: in a square/ring formation, which creates full wave rectification and all that. Wikipedia has a good lay explanation of the general phenomenon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_modulation

Edit: Great, typing all this out has me wanting to play with the circuit to see what can be done ...

Edit edit: There it is, the Wikipedia article explains it ... true ring mod produces 2x "regarded as multiplication, this amounts to squaring." The GR produces X^2, which is the same thing but I think we can see how doubling multiple frequencies is not the same as squaring multiple frequencies ... this is probably why Ring Mods can produce 5ths from double stops, but the GR produces ... something gross.

Very cool about the actual ring arrangement of diodes!!
I hope you do mess with it and see what you can get.
The Wiki info is interesting, will have to look over your explanation closer to see if I can understand it better. ME=n00b

(If anyone's curious, skip to 3:50 here, though it's a little hard to hear: http://midwayfair.bandcamp.com/)

I can't hear it- sounds like some high notes on a synth maybe- super subtle in this recording. Great sounding rec though, will have to listen to more of your band's stuff. Vox are reminiscent of Cat Stevens a bit.

The green ringer was one of the first circuits I breadboarded, I didn't care for it by itself, but throw a fuzz in with it, and I liked the results. I didn't know how to match the trannies, so I was just trying out different ones until I found a combination that gave me the sound I liked.

glowsheep, I might still have to look into this further, sounds like my Macheen which on it's own I don't like (without changing settings entirely) but combined with other dirt pedals is fantastic.

I just learned how to insert quotes. Woot.

Oh my bad, I assumed it was a RM. Ya I actually don't like octave up effects. My Micro POG always has upper turned all the way down.

$2000?!? Pffft! That's museum piece pricing in my book.

DAM is a pedal company that makes cool fuzz pedals. They have an almost cult following of customers (prepared to pay 2k a pedal as muff said  :o). They also make the infamous Meathead Fuzz.

Sounds like your having a cool time dude!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think one of the guys in Fu Manchu also makes pedals (I think the pedals name is Creepy Fingers). His stuff is drooled over nearly as much as the DAM stuff on stompboxes.co.uk!

Let's hear it!
Personally, I love ring modulators, but you have to set them just right and be into that sort of sound. With the right settings/combo I love em. But even then it is not something you have turned on often or for long periods of time. I am currently using a Line6 MM4 for trem/phase/ring modulator. I love the options and such but I am really pining for the day I replace it with home made baby builds. :)

Oh, solid wire, why didn't I ever think of that. Is it easier to work with and solder? What gauge do you use?

I have used a Fulltone BassDrive extensively (FullDrive variant essentially)- I loved it- not sure if there is a clone in the DIY community.

Lots of topics touch on this- search function is your friend- (I should talk, one of these topics I started recently! hah!) There should be a sticky on this topic somewhere- it is revisited regularly.
