Build Reports / Re: First 'Bean: Retrograde.
February 05, 2013, 02:20:03 AM
Thanks for the comments guys!

@effectslation
I didn't get the enclosure from smallbear, it looks a bit different. I think I did see someone post a build using one of their enclosures recently though.

@raulduke
The knobs I bought locally, they are fairly common in the electrical shops here. They are made by Sato parts who have an English website http://www.satopartsusa.com/ and the part number is K-2195 (small I think).

I've completed a few more builds over the weekend so I hope to get some more pics up soon.

Build Reports / Re: More wood (Egghead)

Cool man, nice to see some woodwork.
Lots of potential for different timbers, stains etc but ovioucsly poses a whole new set of challenges.
Those "type 2" switchcraft jacks might be easier to fit than the usual stompbox type.

I imagine it will age nicely. ;D

Thanks guys!
The enclosure is the same size as an Ibanez or Maxon pedal, think tubescreamer. It's bigger than a 1590b.

I got it from Garrett Audio, they are the Japanese version of Small Bear or Mammoth.
Here's a link in case anyone feels like an adventure! http://www.garrettaudio.com/

The bad news is I don't think they ship overseas. They have some cool stuff but there's also a lot of interesting electronics shops here in Tokyo. There's some stuff that I can only get from Small Bear though.

Build Reports / First 'Bean: Retrograde.
January 27, 2013, 09:14:31 AM
I've finally boxed up my first 'Bean. A lovely Retrograde.

The skinny:

MadBean fabbed board and SJ Effects 3PDT board.
Alps pots
Switchcraft jacks
Sato knobs
Alpha 3PDT
Belden teflon wire
Nichicon Electrolytics, Toshin Kogyo film caps and some random ceramic fella.
1/4w Carbon comps
Diodes, transistors and transformer as per the BOM.
White LED (looks blue in the pic)
Blue hammertone Ibanez style enclosure.

Special thanks to Brian and Steve for the great PCBs. The socket on the 3PDT was invaluable while I spent a few hours hunting down a loose piece of solder that was causing a short.

Open Discussion / Forum suggestion; Pedal of the Month
January 27, 2013, 07:20:37 AM
I did a quick search and I couldn't find any previous mention of this but how about having a Pedal of the Month vote in the Build Reports section, like they do a guitar of the month over at the Warmoth forum?

Just a thought ::)

Open Discussion / Re: Ipad apps for pedal builders?
January 25, 2013, 01:34:26 AM
So far I've been using a windows version of inkscape (via Wine) on my iMac.

I haven't tried any ipad apps yet but I figured they should be easier to use ;D

I've been looking through the app store and iDraw, Inkpad and TouchDraw caught my eye. If only they came with templates and libraries of stombox paraphernalia instead of bedrooms and bathrooms ;D

Thanks Jimi.
Some good ideas there.

I was hoping to find something that makes to easy to put clock markings, dots, numbers, etc around pots.
I've tried inkscape but I can only manage about 5 minutes before I give up.

Open Discussion / Ipad apps for pedal builders?
January 24, 2013, 03:45:39 AM
Just a shot in the dark, does anyone know any good apps that are useful for us pedal builders?
I'm thinking design tools for pcbs and decals.

I love it.
A tweeker's delight and sounds great too.

Nice work.

A friend of mine has an early 2000s Breedlove mandolin, awesome axe.

Any idea how long mammoth orders usually take?
I placed mine on the 23rd and it stills says processing.

Perhaps the enclosures are painted and drilled to order rather than off the shelf?

wow! cool! uF mF are the same, correct? if so,  i'm down to 220R, 470R and 1k2 resistors...

Looks like SB use mf instead of uf so 47mf would be right, as for voltage anything above 16v is fine for the retrograde.
Some pedals such as the kingslayer bump up the voltage so you need a minimum of 25v for those.

You are probably looking under film type caps, try looking under electrolytic caps.
I'd be surprised if small bear dont have any.

No, as Bean said the 0.47u is 100x too small.

Maybe think of it like this, 0.47u is roughly one half (0.5) a "u" whereas 47u is almost 50 "u"s.

Build Reports / Re: Just finished the Lowrider!

Great clip, think I might have to build one of these!

Also good to see I'm not the only one who accidentally relics their enclosures ;D I did exactly the same today trying to sand out a tiny scratch and ended up taking loads of finish off.
