the only gripe I have with Mammoth is their outrages shipping cost.  I ordered several 1590Bs and 1590As and the shipping cost was about 50% of the total cost.  That was the cheapest ground shipped to California.  Jeeze!!  I ordered the same from tayda, from Thailand, and thier shipping was much cheaper than mammoth's.

Build Reports / Re: Ge Mangler with NOS parts

Jeeze!!!  You struck GOLD!!  Did you check the other room in the office?  Your in-law may just as well have a couple of 59 Les pauls and 57 strats laying around :)

Where did you get the 392K resistor?  I'm ordering the parts for this build.

I think it was Chordball that posted the link to the station that has the free element. It does say it comes with one in the ad.

I'n going to push the Hakko at anyone who's interested again. It made soldering SMD parts so much easier. I highly recommend it, especially since SMD is coming to every part in the future. Its temperature control and heat reservers are far better than any other station or iron I've used.

Oops....my bad.  Yes, it was Chordball. :)

The station posted days it has a ceramic element replacement it comes with.

Sorry dude, but I have no idea.  I just scrolled up and noticed you were originally asking RobA the question, as you quoted him.  LOL...  I have no clue what free ceramic filament you speak of... sorry dude.

Sorry, are you referring to the solder station I just purchased or my old weller 35watt soldering iron?  I don't know of any free ceramic eliment replacement.

Nice, but already ordered the one I posted, and got a free DMM with the order :)

Oh hell yeah, not only does it desolder,I use it to reflow joints as well(just don't use the bulb),it's quick and easy. You can replace the tips on it for about 1.99 too. I can't say enough good things about this tool.

Yea glad to hear it.  It really does a great job of desoldering and "reflowing".  Can't beat the price as well.

Open Discussion / Really handy tool for all you DIYers

This electric desoldering iron comes in handy for sure and makes for a clean and fast desoldering job.  Only $12 at your local radio shack.

Has anyone tried out Electro Harmonix Talking Wah pedal?  Sounds a bit like that puke wah.

Well, now that I've really taken an addictive hobby on making pedals for the last year now, I've decided to upgrade from my Weller WP35 35watt soldering iron for a soldering station with temp control.  I need one that would also so shut off automatically when not in use for long period of time.  I've accidentally left the soldering iron on, after building a pedal and to leave my work area to test it

I found this one...http://www.circuitspecialists.com/soldering-station-60-watt-3dlf.html

watcha think?

Okay, yeah it must be the ICL one that has the S designation. But, also the TC1044 one that I use too.

It's been quite a while since I've had one of the MAX ones since they are the more expensive...or used to be. I will amend the doc.

Thanks!  The max1044 is only a few cents more expensive compared to the other SCPA spec'd counter parts.

$3.40 for the max1044 http://www.mammothelectronics.com/MAX1044CPA-Charge-Pump-by-Maxim-Integrated-Product-p/400-1125.htm

$3.21 for the TC1044SCPA http://www.mammothelectronics.com/TC1044SCPA-Microchip-Technology-Charge-Pump-IC-p/400-1126.htm

The cheapest I've seen for the Max1044 was from tadya at $2.19 for one, $1.99 for ten.

Ahh...thanks!  No wonder I coudn't find a Max1044SCPA anywhere. :)

I was just reading the RR docs, and it stated to use "SCPA" Max1044 instead of the "CPA" marked ones.  This is due to whinning noise, but I've read the data sheet for the Max1044CPA which has boost function to remedy this problem.  Did they revise the Max1044CPA have the feature that the pevious Max1044 did not have?

Here is the data sheet.

General Questions / Re: Weener Transistor

They work the same. They tend to have higher gain, but almost EVERY modern transistor has more gain than the same part number from several decades ago -- see BC109s for example.

Guitar pedals is probably the only place where low-gain is ever really desirable. I mean, have you tried finding a modern, in production silicon transistor with guaranteed hfe < 100? I'm not sure there are any.

I've purchased a bunch of BC108B and many were between 70 to 140 hfe.  I sorted them out for si Fuzz Face uses, these are the metal cans.
