Can anyone point me to some learning material or tutorials on how to troubleshoot? I've got multimeters, and a test probe, but I'm no good at interpreting what I find. Thanks!

Reverb Nation or Band Camp?

Hey guys, which one do you use to share your band's music? Do you have a preference? Why? What do you like about one and not the other? Do you use both? Is there a different site other than these two that I should consider as well?

I was in a hurry to share some originals from my new band, so I quickly created a Reverb Nation page & uploaded the songs, so that I could share them on our Facebook page & elsewhere. This morning I thought to myself "hey, what about Band Camp? Which one should I be using?" Etc

Thanks!

Open Discussion / Advice for reviving an old Boss pedal
February 01, 2015, 06:42:28 PM
I've got a 1986 Boss HM-2 that I haven't used in a long, loooong time. I figured I should sell it. I plugged it in today to make sure it still works OK, and guess what? It doesn't. The LED is dead, which I can probably replace no problem. But the sound is wrong... I know these things sounded bad to begin with, but something is wrong. Way too raspy/fuzzy, and the volume is going up and down a bit. I pulled up some youtube videos to refresh my memory about how it's supposed to sound, and there's definitely something wrong with mine.

So, any advice on where to start? Should I spray the pots with pot cleaner? Are there any known issues with these, as in, are there any components I should check first?

It's entirely possible that a bonehead friend of mine damaged it decades ago when he borrowed it. His name way Ray, and he was an idiot. Knowing him, he may have plugged the wrong power supply in to it. I seem to remember trying the pedal some 20 years ago and thinking "hmmm, something sounds wrong", then putting it back on the shelf and forgetting about it.

Any advice, tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Open Discussion / What to pair a Shin-Ei FY-2 with?
March 14, 2014, 04:16:27 PM
Hey all, this is my first real post here - Some of you know me from BYOC & DIYSB. I thought I'd pose this particular question to this forum, because why not?

I've got a modded Shin-Ei Companion FY-2 fuzz on the breadboard & I'm getting ready to solder it up and box it.

I'm planning on recycling an old enclosure that's drilled for two stomp switches, and used to house two different effects. So, does anyone have any ideas for me on what to pair up with the Shin-Ei? I've already solved the volume drop issue typical of the FY-2 by tacking on a LPB-1-style clean boost at the end, always on (ala the General Guitar Gadgets schematic), so I don't need a clean boost after it.

What about a dirty (or clean) boost before it? I'm thinking about an MXR Micro Amp. What have you guys experienced as far as boosts before fuzzes?

edit: I'm also considering wiring the second stomp switch to a second volume pot, to have a pseudo-boost/two different volumes at my foot - any opinions on that? I've seen others do this, but I've never done it myself.

What else? Any other ideas? I'm coming up blank at the moment. Any help appreciated!
