I'm putting together a basic op amp based clean boost and thoughts I might experiment adding a clipping indicator circuit to show when the op amp is close to or is clipping the signal. Surprise, surprise.

An online search found plenty for higher voltage power amps but nothing useful in regards to a 9-volt, simple op amp circuit à la the MXR Micro Amp.

Does anybody know of a simple, yet effective circuit or way of accomplishing this?

General Questions / Boss Replacement Pots
May 25, 2020, 05:36:55 AM
Does anybody know where I can source a replacement pot of a Boss pedal? Specifically, a 9mm right-angle Alpha-style 250k reverse audio pot with a split shaft.

I've been on a bit of roll at the moment repairing a number of commercially made guitar pedals.

One critical component in the power supply of one pedal, however, has a missing solder pad and broken trace. Possibly caused by a botched repair attempt. At the moment, I've got a jumper wire installed (crude but effective) to bridge the gap between the component in question and the next down the line.

My question is are there any thing more effective? I've seen the use of copper tape and conductive ink pens. Any other methods out there?

General Questions / Tips For Desoldering Components
April 29, 2020, 05:49:24 AM
I've been doing a few repairs lately on a handful of commercial pedals that often require desoldering faulty components. My main to techniques involve desoldering wick and a good old solder sucker.

Does anybody want tricks and tips on better using these methods more effectively? Especially on double-sided PCBs?

General Questions / Solder Flux: Which Type?
April 24, 2020, 03:31:17 AM
Does anyone have any recommendation regarding which flux to use when soldering? I use flux-infused solder but bought some 'flux in a pen' when I was soldering some guitar pots and use it occasionally on guitar pedal PCBs for SMDs. Is rosin flux fine for use on guitar pedal PCBs? Any feedback and suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anybody know of any readily available pedal enclosures i.e. 1590B/125B-style that have 100% straight/vertical sides?

Build Reports / My Little Monster (Grapevine Build)
June 01, 2011, 06:44:29 AM
Greetings All,

I'd thought I share with you my Grapevine build or as I call it, Little Monster (Little in size but with a Monster sound). I decided to make it look like a miniature amp head, since its a foundation pedal (as the team at Catalinbread says) for my sounds I basically stays on all the time and works well with other pedals.

Any feedback, comments and questions are welcome. Thanks Brian for the layout! Sounds great!

Enjoy!

I'm currently working on a Grapevine build and have a question regarding the Rock/Rawk switch. Below is an image of the how to wire the DPDT switch, the question I pose is what switch position is what? With the switch in position A or position B if looking at the switch from behind. I'd be grateful for any help on this one.  :-[

Greetings All,

I'd thought I'd share with you some images of my first Madbean build, what I call the Rock'n a Box:

Just like the original but I've added the LEDs (therefore the wiring of the switches etc differs from the original also) and I had to sub C8 and C9 with 2n2 capacitors as I couldn't source any 2n capacitors. I also created a couple of PCBs for the switches to try and keep the wiring a little tidier. Things were a little tight inside but a great sounding pedal and highly recommended build! Thanks Brian.

Any comments welcome.

Greetings All,

Does anybody know where you can get a 20k Audio for a Kokbox build? Note: I'm not based in the US (New Zealand) in fact.
