Build Reports / Boom Boom Brassmaster
May 26, 2024, 08:03:02 PM
I was listening to the bass fuzz on Frank Sinatra's "The World We Knew" and seen that Carol Kaye played the bass.  So I went on her webpage and emailed her to ask what effect that was and she replied! Only problem was she didn't remember the name of the pedal but she sent me a fuzzy picture of herself using it at the Sinatra session and after scouring the internet I found it was the BrassMaster.  This thing sounds amazing!  Thanks MadBean!

Build Reports / Wolfbox Motown DI
September 25, 2019, 04:28:37 AM
Came across a couple more Triad A-11j transformers so I had to build another Wolfbox DI.  Once you play bass or guitar through one of these, you'll never want to plug in any other way.

Build Reports / Naughty Fish Wrecktronix
September 20, 2018, 05:00:25 PM
I think this is My favorite build. If you want that classic funkadelic Bootsy Collins sound, Naughty Fish can't be beat!

I like this pedal in BB size enclosure, which is closer to the big Mutron size pedal.

Enjoy!

I want to make my LED1 (the envelope driven one) brighter. Would that be resistor R23 or R26??

Build Reports / Guitarpcb Small Clone
June 20, 2018, 01:46:28 AM
My niece is playing guitar now, and she's obsessed with Nirvana.  So Being the great Unc I am, I put together this Small Clone Chorus with a PCB from Guitarpcb.com

Feedback appreciated!

Build Reports / Retrograde Wrecktavia
November 24, 2017, 07:39:46 PM
Finally finally got this thing working.  I had the case powder coated at a rim shop and had the graphics laser etched at a place in downtown LA called thebuildshop.com

This was my first time using the light panels with an LED.  It looks really cool but it took a lil cutting and grinding to get it to match up.

Most importantly it sounds amazeballs!

Tech Help - Projects Page / Retrograde 2014 Oscillating
October 24, 2017, 05:37:38 AM
Just finished a retrograde, it sounds really great. I've read a thread of someone having this same problem, but didn't see a resolution.

Turning up the Fuzz & Vol pot gives me an oscillating noise, it starts when I'm about 95% cranked on either pot, and it's significantly louder with the Oct switch on.

Build Reports / Stagefright
August 02, 2017, 08:56:12 PM

Finally finished this thing after spending a week trying to figure out a problem with IC1.  The socket was bad.

I used envirotex on the artwork, it worked great, but I think I should've waited another day for it to dry because when I screwed in the LED holder it made a ring around it.

Any how it sounds amazing! Build one if you need a great sounding Phaser.

Thanks madbean!

Reflowed all my solder, and went thru the schematic about 5 times.

Getting strange voltages on my stage fright.  Replaced TL074 with a new IC, still no love.  My rate LED doesnt light up, but when I touch any probe to pin 5 of the TL074 IC1, it begins to strobe.  Any ideas?

Build Reports / Wolfbox Direct Box
April 13, 2017, 11:36:46 PM
After a year of searching for the elusive Triad Magnetics A-11/12j transformer, I finally got one on ebay!  Been wanting to build this for a long time, finally got it done.

Ed Wolfrum the engineer for Motown and United Sound Studios in Detroit, posted the schematic on his web page after having a falling out with ACME Electronics.

I dont play Bass as good as James Jamerson, but it sounds amazing!

Im getting sound thru with my Kraken, but no effects.  Pin 5 on my IC1 and Q2 Collector is giving me 3.26 volts instead of 0.598 volts.  Any thoughts?  Thanks guys.

Build Reports / Maestro Fz-1A Fuzztone
December 10, 2016, 04:26:13 AM
Just finished this build off of a layout from
http://effectslayouts.blogspot.com/2015/06/maestro-fz-1a-fuzz-tone.html#comment-form

This was my first perfboard build.  I got the small wedge enclosure from Frys Electronics.  It was a bit difficult to work with because it was made from steel, but I got it together.

I used Krylon Glitter paint for the sides, and just sealed it with glossy enamel and cooked it in the toaster oven at 150degrees for about an 30 mins.

I used Testors Decal paper for the logo and decals, it came out great at first but for some reason when I sprayed it with enamel to seal it, it bubbled and it didnt come out as good as I wished but its fine.

Got the transistors from Small Bear with the bias resistors, he was such a great help with that side of the build.

The original is 1.5volts but luckily the effects layout had worked in a voltage stepdown so I was able to run it with a 9volt power supply.  I just had to reverse all the diodes and Caps, and make sure you order NPN Transistors not PNP.

Anyway thanks for everyones help, this site has made building really fun! Enjoy!

Build Reports / Kraken aka Wreckster
November 27, 2016, 05:17:36 AM
Finished my Kraken build! I used Krylon Glitter paint for the sides, and gave it about 3 coats of clear enamel.  I gotta find something thicker to coat the sides with next time.

I finally got around to using Envirotex on the top with some testors decal paper.  Juansolo was a big help, I sent him a few messages and he really helped with his suggestions.

For those of you that haven't tried it.  Do it!!!. It comes out so cool!  It wasn't that hard at all, just go slow.  Prepping is everything!
I will admit, you have to sit there and baby sit it for about an hour so that it doesn't drip down the sides.  And you really have to make sure you use a level, and pour it on a very flat even surface.  But I followed Juansolos tutorial and it came out excellent for my first shot.  Make sure you use a step bit to re drill the holes.  My next pour will be even better.

I decided to put a #5 dice on the up/down switch because it is a remake of the Mutron Micro V.

Next build im finishing a Maestro FZ-1a.  Wish me luck.

Build Reports / Audio Test Probe Kit
October 27, 2016, 04:27:06 AM
Just wanted to share this Audio Probe I built today.  It was really simple.  I used a PAM8403 Amp and a small flat speaker in a plastic case with probe plugs in the back.  It runs on a 5v power supply.  I got all the parts at ALL Electronics in Van Nuys.  Only thing I wasnt able to do is put an LED Light on the switch, I couldnt get it to work.  Ohh Well it sounds great and is really portable. Let me know what you think!

Tech Help - Projects Page / Naughty Fish help
October 08, 2016, 01:28:27 AM
Finally finished my Naughty Fish... Just cant get it to work right.

When the range switch is to the left, I get no effect.  I get signal thru, but no effect.  Then When I switch the range to the right, I get effect.  Could there be something funny with the DPDT On-On switch? I got all the parts from Small Bear.

Thanks for any help or tips you guys can give.

Tech Help - Projects Page / Naughty Fish Static
April 01, 2016, 08:34:37 PM
To all you gurus out there. I finally got this Naughty Fish together.  My first attempt at etching, didnt come out that bad, next time I hope it to be better.  Having a couple issues.

in LP mode everything sounds fine.  But if I switch to HP or BP and have the range switched to UP (Left) I get lots of static.  Switchin the Range to down it goes away.  Also if I have the Lo-Hi switch on HI I get static.  I did a walk thru of every component (twice).  and triple checked my connections.  Turning the sweep pot also changes the static.  Here are my IC Voltages.

Can one of you wise old owls help me figure out what type of pots I need
for the Gain, Peak, and Volume Pots on a Naughty Fish build.

and The Kraken Attack, Decay and Range pots.

Been reading about it but still cant grasp the Audio, Reverse Audio, and Linear options.
