Build Reports / A different way of doing Face Plates
January 29, 2014, 05:42:02 AM
Not sure if this should go in the Build Reports or not.

Been playing with different ways to do Face plates. I like this so I thought I'd share.

I used magazine paper onto black FR4 but what sets this one apart for me is the two tone. Part of it being tinned silver and the rest being the copper from the FR4. I used liquid frisket to protect the copper I didn't want to be tinned. Same stuff I use to use when I airbrushed. You paint it on and wait for it to dry then peal it off.

I finished it up with Envirotex. The photos don't show how nice the Envirotex looks against this black FR4.

Anyway, thought I'd share because I haven't seen anybody do this yet (using frisket) and I think there is some potential here. Plus, I want to give something back to the community and since I don't know anything about designing circuits yet, it will have to be something like this.

The blue showing through the holes is painters tape.

Open Discussion / I am an idiot
January 29, 2014, 04:58:26 AM
Just finished soldering up my Sharkfin. Put the IC's in so I could rock it before I box it. Plugged in the guitar and nothing. That of course is followed by the usual moment of depression. I mean, who wants to trouble shoot a Sharkfin. Am I right guys? Then, as usual I'm confronted with my own stupidity... A sharkfin won't work when you forget to put ALL SIX transistors in. It's touchy like that.

Put those bad boys in and it fired right up. I'm a happy boy again.

Build report soon. Gotta finish the box now.

General Questions / Inexpensive recording solution
January 22, 2014, 02:34:10 AM
Hi all. My son is a fairly talented writer and rapper. He's made me appreciate this type of music and is trying to use it for positive purposes.

Now the question. I want to support him in this and want to get something he can use to record his songs. I don't want it to be to expensive but still adequate. He does have an Ipad Mini, maybe there is something for that.

Thanks for your help in advance.

General Questions / Waterslide Decal Paper
January 12, 2014, 03:22:32 AM
Time to order some more. I don't have a color laser so it would have to be inkjet. I know the quality can vary so what have you had luck with?

Just found a used Squire Affinity Strat on Craigs list for $100. It was near my house so I thought I'd pick it up as a project guitar. Something I can use to learn how to work on guitar without harming my real axes.

It's definitely cheap but I expected that, but there might be some potential here. The neck and the action is OK. The frets need some dressing so I'll use this to learn how to do that.

So the challenge:  Turn this guitar into something decent if that is possible. I know there are a lot of creative guys here. So any suggestions?

Build Reports / Boss DS1 with Keely Mods
December 30, 2013, 06:58:18 AM
A Boss DS1 with Seeing Eye and Ultra Mods from Keely.

A few firsts on this one. My first Vero build and my first water slide decal. The switches put LED's into the circuit for more crunch and distortion. They are exposed so they flash as they are overdriven. Pretty cool.

I've always like the DS1 for leads. Put a Tube Screamer in front for rhythm crunch and kick on the DS1 for lead. Great pedal for layering.

The build is from Sabro Tone.

Learning how to keep vero wiring really neat is going to be a learning curve.

Build Reports / Triple Wretch
December 29, 2013, 04:16:42 AM
Chi-Boy's T-Wrex. Everything is stock but the boost section. I put a Thunderpuss in there instead.
I etched the face plate using trying to get it as close to Wampler's pedal as I could. I also and tinned part of it while leaving the name copper. It is painted with a transparent auto paint. The photo doesn't capture how nice it is. It looks like it's been anodized. Hopefully it will be durable.

General Questions / Shielded Cable
December 19, 2013, 02:26:33 AM
Hi all. I'm building a T-Wrex from Chi_boy and it has two separate sections on one board, distortion and boost. Should I use shielded cables on both or just the tips on the in and out jacks. Hopefully this makes sense.

Build Reports / Eq Reverb Pedals
December 06, 2013, 05:05:48 AM
My wife asked me to build her a combination Reverb EQ pedal so I used the opportunity to build one for myself. It is a combination of a Six shooter and a Rub-a-dub. My first attempt at the distressed look and I used alcohol ink on my wife's pedal.

Hi all. Just tried etching with Muriatic Acid and Hydrogen Peroxide using a 1 to 1 ratio and its taking forever. Much longer than Ferric Chloride. Is there any way to speed up the process? Would heating it up a bit first help?

Some details that might help. The copper clad is 1 oz. Its been in there for over 30 minutes and looks like its about 50% finished. Is this normal?

General Questions / What do you use for Clear Coating
December 01, 2013, 05:59:58 AM
I just finished a pedal with my first decal and clear coated it. I used Rustoleum and wasn't that happy with the results. What clear coat do you use?

Thanks

Open Discussion / SMD equivalents
November 20, 2013, 09:51:29 PM
Since we all seem to be talking about SMD lately I found this and thought it would be helpful. I found it to be encouraging to see all the transistors etc. that are available. In fact, I wish I would have seen it a few days ago. I needed and MPSA14 for a vero Zakk Wylde pedal I'm building and ended up spending almost $5.00 to get one on ebay. Mouser has the SMD equivalent for 36 cents. Could have thrown together a little adapter board.

I'm sure there's more information like this out there and perhaps more informative, but I found this really interesting and thought I would share it.

Open Discussion / Opinions on the DCA75
November 20, 2013, 05:39:50 PM
For my birthday my wife and son gave me enough money to buy a DCA75. This thing really intrigues me but before I pull the trigger I wanted to get some opinions from those who have used one? Have you found it to be really useful?

I know velcro is probably the most popular but has anybody tried the bike chain method?

General Questions / Tayda J201 and 2n5457
October 18, 2013, 05:23:49 PM
Hi all,
I know a while back that there was some questionable J201's from Tayda. Has anybody purchased any lately and have they worked for you?

Also, has anybody had any experience with their 2N5457's?

Thanks in advance
