Build Reports / MadBean Smoothie - Thanks Gaffled
March 07, 2016, 12:19:46 AM
Continuing my 1590A obsession, addiction, infatuation , whatever ... Bought the populated and tested board from Gaffled - thanks Mike! Replaced the full sized electro caps with minis, popped everything in a Pedal Parts Plus Wave Purple box, with a violet LED from Small Bear, and I've got a nice phaser to go with my other itty-bitty pedals.  I really like this one, it truly is a smoothie.  Here's the face decorated/labeled with craft stamps:

Build Reports / Dead Astronaut FX Chasm Reverb
February 22, 2016, 02:00:42 AM
This one has been on my board and on for several months.  Fired right up first time with no issues at all.  Goes from pretty good reverb all the way past 'What the ...?" - love this one so much it sat for eight or nine months as a bare box with all the pencil marks from drilling on it.  Added graphics today with toner transfer and craft stamps plus several coast of satin clear.  Oh, tried the metal polish trick on this one but the box is a no name cheapo so it didn't clean up as well.

And the guts:

Looking at the gut shot I noticed the untrimmed LED legs so I took care of that before it went back on the board - I really expected to tear this thing apart a couple of times before it worked.

Build Reports / Egghead
February 07, 2016, 10:35:00 PM
Another 1590A build - these things are addictive.  Finished up this afternoon.  Brian's Egghead board pretty much by the BOM - used an NE5532P IC and C2 is a 100pf and a 22pf because I forgot to order a 120pf.  Printer ceased to pee so I couldn't use the graphic on it but after I drilled the enclosure I grabbed a piece of steel wool and some All Metal stainless steel polish.  After scrubbing it a bit I wiped it off to find a reasonably shiny surface (the doesn't show in the photos) that looks very different from a sanded surface.  Board from MadBean, wire from Guitar PCB, Hammond box from an eBay seller, and all other hardware and knobs from Small Bear.

Finished up two more 1590A builds this weekend!  First up is AlanP's Minivache (shared on OSH Park) a stripped down (de-complicated) version of the MadBean La Vache.  Used a 2N3565 trannie and went straight to big red LEDs for the clipping diodes.  Box is a PPP in 24 karat gold (very tiny metalflake) with Small Bear knobs.  Managed to over think installing the trannie the first time out but once in the right way round it became 'where have yo been all my life!'

Guts (could have drilled this one a bit better)

Next up is Guitar PCBs Emerald Ring - Green Ringer - originally built as part of a combo sold as a Purple Platypus.  Really not a huge fan of the Angry Red Camel/Way Huge Red Llama but the Ring works great so I re-boxed it in a PPP translucent emerald green enclusure.  Had to remove the trannie sockets, replace the electro cap with a compact version and adjust the jack location to allow room for the bi-color LED but the rest was a piece of cake.

Build Reports / Runoffgroove 18
March 01, 2015, 09:17:41 PM
This etching thing is addictive!  Finished up the Runoffgroove 18 this weekend.  Etched the board using Paco de Luca's layout.  The 'art' on the front is an extra layout ironed on and coated with a couple coats of satin clear.  3PDT board from GuitarPCB and Barry's pot condoms are hidden under the board.  Knobs from Small  Bear.  Not sure this makes my Champ sound like a Marshall 18W but it does have a nice low end growl and some interesting dynamics when the Gain is rolled off.

Build Reports / Solar Flare
December 26, 2014, 07:31:30 PM
Was really hoping for a few more posts after Leevibe's Class of '77 (Woof!) but I guess somebody's got to jump in...

Here's my fresh new Nucleon Solar Flare (version 1) (modified Keeley Fuzzhead) in a Mouser Trapezoid Hammond box. Sanded the top of the box flat before adding graphics with transfer paper (touched up the lettering with a fine sharpy- damn my hands shake) then hit it with a couple coats of satin clear coat.  Build is straight up by the BOM with the addition of a GuitarPCB 3PDT board and pot condoms.  First plug in was a real downer (no fuzz-no bypass) until I figured out that I had very diligently and carefully reversed the tip and sleeve on the in jack - doh!  With that fixed I set the trimmers at about 50% - sounds so good I'm not sure I'll mess with those again.

Build Reports / Grace and the Fuzzy-Muff
November 28, 2014, 10:12:42 PM
Got two done!

First is the ROG Grace - I etched another board, this could really be addictive.  The box is a 1290NS from Pedal Parts Plus in their new Hooker Red.  Pot condoms, hook-up wire and 3PDT board from GuitarPCB.  Knobs from Small Bear.
Here's the face:

And the guts:

Next up is JMK's Fuzzy-Muff - a nice little not quite Big Muff fuzz.  Box is a gloss white 1290NS from PPP padded with purple alcohol ink (looks better in person) and a couple coats of satin clear.  Again pot condoms, hook-up wire and 3PDT board from GPCB.  SB knobs.

Build Reports / Orphan Fuzz
November 23, 2014, 07:28:16 PM
Finally finished this one.  This is the Orpheum/Mosrite Hybrid from one of Jon Patton's group buy deals quite a while back.
Both switch positions give wonderful vintage fuzz sounds.

Build Reports / Spackler
November 22, 2014, 09:13:54 PM
I etched a board!  And it works!!! This is the MadBean Spackler that I etched.  Not really sure why I suddenly felt a need to try etching.

Box is a Silver Vein 1290NS from Pedal Parts Plus, 3PDT board from GuitarPCB, most of the guts from Tayda, I think the knobs are from Small Bear, and the stomp is from BLMS.

Provides a nice boost and can add a significant amount of nice warm mids to single coils.

Build Reports / aion Halo Triangle ... Quadrangle?
November 15, 2014, 06:00:35 PM
Finished this up this morning - an aion Halo (BMP) built almost to Triangle specs except that I couldn't help but add a mid control since the spots are already there for the board mounted pots - maybe should call this one a Quadrangle, or maybe not.  Back in September this one ended up in the Land of Misfit Pedals - checked (almost) every component and redid the wiring twice.  Finally got around to checking the jacks and found both of them were FUBAR.  In the process of redoing everything I managed to over heat the switch.  While waiting on new switches Kevin announced his new boards including his new 3PDT wiring boards.  Got all hot and bothered about the Solaris board and ordered a matching red 3PDT board.  In a 'Doh!' moment I remembered the Halo board is red.  Used a red switch from BLMS, a aion red 3PDT board and red wire to rewire the Halo.  May have to order a red box to rebox this one and call it the Red Muff.  The box is a Translucent Gold 1290NS from Pedal Parts Plus, knobs are from Small Bear and I did my usual beveled led hole.  The jacks are Tayda but tested before they were installed.

Build Reports / Meet Bob
November 09, 2014, 10:33:44 PM
This is one of Pickdropper's 4-knob Ross Compressor boards with some jangle mods I found, I think, in the Mods section here - can't find them again for some reason. Used a GuitarPCB buffered 3PDT board, a Cookies and Cream 125B from Pedal Parts Plus and some really nice knobs from Small Bear.  The jangle mods work really well with both my Danelectro U2 and Broadcaster-ish Tele.

When I first plugged this in it was dead.  Nothing, nada, zilch, zip.  Everything looked right and tested okay (didn't check the jacks themselves) so I tossed it in the Misfit Pedal box until this past weekend when I was looking at a help me post on GuitarPCB.  The poster had grounding issues with what is a pretty simple build and one of the responders suggested one of the jacks could be a problem.  Hum, grabbed my cheapo DMM and started checking my Misfits and son of a gun the majority of them have perfect continuity between the tip and sleeve.  In this case both jacks were bad.  Checked a couple new ones from my recent Tayda shipment, out with the old, in with the new and we got Bow, Wah, Yae, and Yeh.  Was thinking something to do with bees and honey on the face but looking at my temporary labels I'm seeing some sort of cartoon robot face.

Oh, Mr MadBean, sir, you need to change the rating on this pedal - you marked it Genius but I managed to build it so it should be rated Moron.

Build Reports / Razorback Devil'd Eggw/Clipping Options
September 07, 2014, 05:09:40 PM
Here's my version Razorback's Devil'd Egg from the recent group buy.  Pretty much a straight up build buy I wandered a bit adding two GuitarPCB DPDT switch bards for clipping options - socketed and currently populated with 1N914s and 1N270s (additional fiddling is planned once I get some more builds completed).  The box is a translucent gamma green 1590BB from Pedal Parts Plus - the green seemed appropriate for a Way Huge Swollen Pickle clone.  Pretty straight forward build and it fired right up first time.  There is some hum at high volume or high gain settings which seems to vary with the diodes selected.

Gut shot:

Face shot (the dirt around the stomp is proof of use not a defect in the finish ;D):

Build Reports / Rangemaster!
May 04, 2014, 01:07:29 PM
This was the first MadBean board I got.  Little sucker kicked my butt and spent almost two years in the Land of Misfit Boxes with a fair amount of company while a lot of more complicated build got done.  When the 3PRR board came out I decided to give him another shot.  I replaced some of the components, socketed the tranny and generally cleaned things up then moved it all into a pre-finished 1590B from Mouser.  Running it through a GrindCustoms Feng (with LED clipping) into my sorry excuse for a Champ clone it is amazing - my wife said it sounds like that Irish guy I always listen to.

Build Reports / Mayfair's Mossy Sloth
March 23, 2014, 04:48:43 PM
This is yet another product of surfing the Group Buy board. Jon's Mossy Sloth Fuzzy Overdrive.  If you didn't grab one of these during the initial group buy I believe Jon still has a few left - these are really nice.  I fought myself every step of the way with this one - mostly drilling boxes.  Finally gave up and went with wired pots instead of the board mounted.  Other than that this is a straight forward build.  Box and knobs are from Mammoth.  This was the second box I attempted the recessed LED bezel look - forgot that I had shifted the drill press table up slightly and damned near drilled right through the top of the box before I caught myself.

The completion date inside the box is a little off - I was real close last night but just ran out of steam.

Build Reports / Meerkat Fuzz
March 23, 2014, 04:37:14 PM
Another product of surfing the Group Buy board - Black Horse's Meerkat Fuzz.  Straight up build in another Mammoth pre-finished box with Small Bear knobs - these are becoming my favorites.  This box is the third I've tried using a countersink to give the LED a recessed bezel look - this one is just about right.

Build Reports / Buffered Boost
March 23, 2014, 04:26:41 PM
A product of surfing the Group Buy board here.  This a Nucleon M-Theory Boost coupled with a Guitar PCB 3PDT Buffer PCB.  Could have planned the layout a little better but plans change as you go along.  The buffer does a nice job of making the pedals play well together and the boost is very, very clean and significant.  The box is from Mammoth in Sea Foam and the knob is from Small Bear.

Build Reports / aion Halo Creamy Dreamer - Evolves
February 16, 2014, 02:46:08 AM
First showed this one off back in October.  Built pretty much by the BOM the guts looked like this:

Sounded fairly good but I wasn't completely on love with it.  First mod was to replace all the 1N914s with OA128s and the 2N5089s with OC141 - got loud and growly with sustain from now till next month.  Tended to get overly nasty though.
So second stage of the evolution:

Replaced the OC141s with OC140s to calm things down just a touch.  Love it.  Wish those OC140s weren't so stinking hard to find.
Oh, I added a few scribbles to the box.  Still trying to figure out final finish and graphics.

Build Reports / A Grind Customs FX Feng
January 25, 2014, 09:42:09 PM
Grind Customs FX Feng OD with switchable clipping.  Got tired of trying for fine finishes (hit it a couple licks on the belt sander) and clever graphics (Google search for 'Feng" and grabbed a Sharpie).  Right now I have 1N4148s and OA128s on the clipping switch.

Guitar PCB #PDT and DPDT boards, pot condoms and hook up wire.

Build Reports / aion Cerulean - Morning Glory
November 30, 2013, 10:21:12 PM
Almost finished this one up this afternoon - everything except the final finish.  An aion Cerulean - a Blues Breaker clone with a half ton of options.  Built this one to Morning Glory specs with the bright cut and populated the selectable clipping with 2 x 3mm green LEDs and 2 x 1N4001s + 1 x 1N914 for now - they're socketed so I've got plenty of play potential.  Here's the box:

And the guts - nice and tidy thanks to the on-board pots and switches:
