General Questions / what delay pedal should i build?
April 30, 2014, 08:11:31 PM
i'm not really a big delay user. I have a g-major 2 and i rarely use the delay effect on it.

that being said, the voices inside my head are telling me to build a delay pedal (and a chorus pedal). i must listen to them.

so... which delay to build?  Was thinking either an aquaboy deluxe or zero point mini?

please help before the voices tell me to build other modulation pedals :)

General Questions / Embarrassed to ask....
March 11, 2014, 12:32:02 AM
I got a bunch of these enclosed stereo switches from blms:

http://www.bitcheslovemyswitches.com/#!/~/product/category=5027593&id=25664011

Problem is, when I think I've wired the tip and sleeve correctly I get no sound. I can see that the tip and ring contacts are switched so when there is nothing plugged  in they are open, but I probed them with a cable plugged  in and figured out which contacts I think are the tip and sleeve, but I just get a super loud buzz when I wire it up, which makes me think that something isn't grounded.

I am going by this schematic . Ground is pin 1. Should the tip be pin 2 or 4? Same with the ring pin 3 or 5?

Thanks

General Questions / Footswitch help
March 03, 2014, 02:55:23 AM
Hi all,

I've been working on a little project and I've hit a bit of a wall and need some help.

I built a small a/b box so I could share my gmajor 2 with two different amps' effects loops. I put an on-on dpdt toggle twitch on it so I can choose amp A or amp B gets the gmajor in its effects loop.  Everything here works fine.

What I would like to do now is to replace the toggle switch with a footswitch to make it easier to switch.

The "easy" way would be to run a 6-wire cable from the splitter box to a footswitch and wire a dpdt stomp switch.  The negative side is that the audio signal now has to run thru the entire length of the cable from box to footswitch 4 times.

Is there a way that I can leave the switching inside the box by using a relay that is triggered by a stomp switch? I've only used a simple on/off relay when I wired up a car stereo system many years ago. Do they make dpdt type relays? I have a few old wall warts kicking around that aren't suitable for effects pedals but would probably work well for this application.

Any help would be appreciated!

Just looking for a sanity check here.

I tuned my Chunk chunk to what i think sounds good, but the voltages that I am reading on the test points seem a bit out of whack:

Vin 9.02 V

TP1:  1.811 V
TP2:  3.465 V
TP3:  1.816 V
TP4:  3.890 V

*confused*

I know that there is supposed to be a lot of variation between J201s, but none of my bias voltages are over 1/2 of Vin

General Questions / Weener wah vs modded crybaby?
February 08, 2014, 09:25:15 PM
Guys,

I have a gcb95 that I have modded according to most of the mods on the stinkfoot.se web site (a pot, vocal mod, switchable mid freq. gain boost)

What will the Weener wah give me that I don't have with my modded crybaby?

Thanks

Open Discussion / Mouser guitar pots
February 01, 2014, 02:14:43 AM
So I am in the middle of upgrading the pots and wiring in my prs se 245.

I was looking at some of the pots at stew Mac and other places and me teeth almost fell out. $10 for. 500kohm cts pot?  Almost $100 for a flipping 4 pot  wiring kit???

Has anyone bought pots for their guitars thru mouser? I saw some nice Bourns pots for under $5 and pots with push-pull switches for $8. I'm just not sure if they are the right size for a guitar (I don't use long shaft pots)

Lso, are volume and tone pots linear or audio taper?

Mods / pulsating LED
October 31, 2013, 03:20:19 PM
Gentlemen,

I have some OD/distortion pedals that I would like to add a pulsating indicator LED to. these pedals are IC or JFET based.

I want something similar to the effect when you use LEDs as clipping diodes, but these circuits don't use clipping diodes.

Any suggestions on how to do this?  Should I tap into the raw guitar input signal for the positive side of the LEDs?

Thanks

General Questions / Kingslayer sounds "honky"
October 29, 2013, 06:05:45 PM
Maybe it's just me, but I find that when I have the soft clipping bypassed and i turn the level and treble up to about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way up the sounds gets kind of honky.

It gets better when i engage the soft clipping, but red LEDs and no soft clipping are really bad. 1n34a and no soft clipping is better, but still annoying.

Is this just the nature of the beast?

Hi All,

I am in the process of debugging my Green Bean pedal.

I have traced the signal up to Q1. there is an audio signal on the base, but nothing on the collector going to C2 ad onto the IC.

I tried swapping Q1 and Q2 with the same results... no signal is making it past Q1.

I also touched up the sockets for Q1 but it made no difference.

on an unrelated (?) point, i noticed that the area around where the DC power comes onto the board and C11 is quite warm/hot. Is it supposed to be like this?  The polarity of C11 is correct on the board (just double checked it as i was typing this

Voltages on Q1:
E: 0 V
B: -0.37 V
C: -0.75 V

I don't think this is right?

Any help would be appreciated.

Mods / Vintage/modern switch to chunk chunk
September 15, 2013, 05:29:12 AM
Gentlemen,

I have been trying to figure out how to add a vintage/modern switch to my chunk chunk.   I found this post

http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=81411.0

With this schematic

http://img509.imageshack.us/i/drss.png/

Here he says he added a switch to go between vintage and modern.   From the diagram it switches between two capacitors coming out of q1 to ground.

I looked at the circuit diagram for the chunk chunk and determined that this was where c3 was.

I took c3 out and replaced it with a wire going to a switch that would let me go between a 1 uF cap and a 470nF cap

Unfortunately I can barely hear any difference, if at all.

Does anyone have any insight into this?  Would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

mouser lists the bf245a as obsolete and only has an SMD replacement.

are there any replacements that have the same form factor (and ideally the same pin out)

Thanks

HI all,

I just finished building my first madbean project - an egodriver.

This is my first PCB build, but i have experience with veroboard builds.

I have run into 2 problems and was hoping to get some help on them:

problem 1:  when i set the gain up i get squealing. I know that squealing is usually due to feedback between the input and output wires;  I am using shielded wires for the board in/out connections.  WHen i get the gain above about 10 or 11 o'clock it starts to squeal/hum.  I don't have a problem when i crank the volume to max, only the gain knob.

problem 2:  i wired a swith to the clipping connectors. I'm not sure which is which but in one position both LEDs light up. in the other position, the LEDs go out and there is a high pitched hum. I'm not sure what's going on here?

I've made sure that the back of the pots are insulated from the board.

can anyone help?

Thanks

Tim
