Title: Question about the Road Rage.
Post by: JakeFuzz on October 29, 2010, 06:21:53 AM
I want to build a few of these in little boxes for my Faultline and my Fulldrive. I want to know, if i hooked up my onespot (or some other simple 2.1mm psup) to a single board and wired several output plugs in parallel, how many pedals could I power with just one Road Rage? It seems to me there is going to be some current limiting factor in the charge pump or voltage regulator. I am only trying to power two pedals at the moment but the added plugs could be useful in the future.

Just so nobody has to do any extensive research, spec sheet for a maxim 1044 says it can deliver 10ma and most voltage regulators I have found deliver up to 100ma.

On a side note could you use two charge pumps (with a voltage dividing resistor in between b/c charge pumps have a max 12 volt input) and a voltage adjustable regulator to get a very accurate 0-18 volt range? Would be kind of cool to have that range on a pot, maybe with a color changing resistor on a dual gang pot!

The charge pumps can supply a higher maximum current rating than 10mA, but the more current you draw, the less efficient it becomes. So, you can expect a higher voltage drop once you start loading down the output. I'm fairly certain you could power a 2-3 overdrives off a single charge pump, since many OD's don't have very high current draws. But, the safest route would be to maybe use a couple of them, say one per two pedals. Since most 9v PS will deliver 100mA there should be enough to go around.

IOW, I think it require some testing...the worst that could happen is you might fry a charge pump.

I really like the idea of a multi-color LED, BTW. Very clever.

Thank you. Ill just build two to be safe then. Yeah I meant color changing LED by the way not resistor. That dual color idea works pretty well, I have it on a variable impedance thing for my wah, it warps between the two colors as you turn the knob. You need to do some math to get it right though.
