Title: Calling out to CRBMoA...(or any other bass player)
Post by: Boom on October 11, 2010, 03:11:16 PM
Hi CRBMoA,

you´re the only bass player that I know of around these parts so I directed my questions to you, but if someone else has a suggestion I´m ready to hear it....

I build a BYOC Rat a couple of years ago, and last year I did some mods to it and gave it to a bass playing friend that was looking for the tone of EODM´s bass player. He loved it, and uses it all the time. I´m getting it back for some repairs though, and I would like to give him another pedal when I finish the repairs.

Sooooo, since I´m not a bass player....what´s the ultimate pedal for bass (diy) that you can think of ?

I would love to hear some suggestions. (I also hope they won´t be too complicated since I´m stressed for time a little lately..)

Thanks guys !

Funny you should ask. I was thinking of the same thing this morning.

As a bassist, I don't care for much effect. I got into pedal building to learn how to build clean compression in a pedal. After two years, I STILL prefer no compression, but that probably has to do with not having it for 30 years. ::)

I actually like a tiny bit of delay (Think Geddy's tone on Closer to the heart on 'Show of Hands').

I ALWAYS run through my Tech 21 PDDI. So I am a clean guy, but that's irrelevant.

Point me in the direction of what this guy wants to hear, and I'll point you to a build.

***EDIT***

Never listened to EODM - Now I would say, Woolly Mammoth or Soda Meiser.

I have tried a bunch of pedals on bass and on a whim I tried a red llama/tube sound fuzz. It sounds REALLY good. I prefer it to the faultline/s.f.t.

I really like the bazz fuss for bass fuzz and the foxx tone machine sounds really good too in the octave off position.

I will try to make a video of my sabertooth/wooly mammoth this week if I have time.

Thanks guys. Great suggestions !

I´ll be looking into all of those. I would like to build him something that the BYOC RAT can´t give him though, so I´ll have to start comparing...

thanks

Those are some great demos!  I've already built a SFT, but I'll have to try the other three.
