Title: that shouldn't do that, should it?
Post by: jessenator on November 02, 2022, 09:44:01 PM
Friend from the UK sent me a newer BOSS pedal which only worked on battery power. I think I found the reason:

works on an adapter when the board isn't getting drawn like a bow...
Definitely going to redo the barrel jack soldering and I might also remove those front ground(?) contacts if I can get away with it.

Between the remote bit inside, and the connectors, it's a lot of force pushing on that PCB.

Wow! Wouldn't have expected that from BOSS. Good thing you caught it before the board cracked.

which model is it?

Check the orientation of the I/O jacks and check for any components fouling before you get the soldering iron out

The Boss Catapult. It's able to launch guitar picks at least 10 feet!

Definitely! Yeah, I wondered if things might've been shoved in there a bit faster than QC could check it, er whatever. I can't blame them, they're probably worked very hard.

It's a Boss/JHS Angry Driver JB-2. I thought it was going to just be a cracked solder joint or something, but I can't see any hairlines. Might reflow it all the same.

Friend sent it, as I had never used one before, and he knew I tinker around with sort of thing, though with these SMD boards anymore I get super nervous.

Well, LaceSensor I took another poke and managed to re-arrange a few wires and connectors and while it still bows—not nearly as bad as before, but still does—but does work again fully assembled. I might need to take it for a longer test drive to see if it holds up for longer.

Like I said, I've never used this one before, and while I like the Blues Driver side well enough on its own, it's overall too crunchy for me. Like a toffee that's been cooked a bit too long, it doesn't have a pleasant breakup on either of J->B  B->J series settings. The parallel one is interesting, but on the whole it hasn't grown on me. Okay, enough of me sounding like a youtubist.

Nice, I've been interested in one of those myself.
