Just looking around, the LM13700 IC has gotten just amazingly expensive. Tayda has it for 3.99 But digikey has surface mount for a Buck and change....Might be time to go that route.

It looks like I got out of the hobby just in time. Now the only thing I still occasionally build are kits, so no more sourcing hassles.
