Title: Lavache - Completed build #1 of 13
Post by: chromesphere on September 05, 2011, 11:18:13 AM
as the title suggests, i have a few madbean projects all going at once.  Sending me slightly crazy but i'm on the home stretch now.

The first one is a Lavache in a 1590b with the boost switch.  No room for a battery of course, but i dont use them anyway.  It was a tight squeeze, wouldnt recommend it for noobs.  Bit messy inside, but with this sort of tight build, my neatness tends to go out the window. :)

Thanks for looking!
Paul

Looks great! And, yes do tell on the jacks. They look like slightly smaller versions of the Neutrik open frames.

Very nice build! I forget that you can lay theose PCB's sideways like that.
I think this circuit comes closer to the Tweed Deluxe sound than anything else I have heard (including the Formula No 5). It's a one trick pony but it does Neil Young pretty well.
Those jacks look like Tayda to me.

Great to see you here Paul. I've seen lots of your work over at DIYSB, but it's nice to have more company around here!

Looking forward to all of you 13 builds.

Jacob

Hey all,  thanks for the compliments.

The jacks are from pedalpartsaustralia.com (as i live in Australia).

Sometimes the inside lug bit gets stuck and pushed back.  Just have to adjust them with some plyers and they are fine.  Apart from that, they are pretty good quality for cheapies.  I used the futurlec jacks for a while but they are terrible quality.  I also wouldnt recommend the futurlec on off on switches.  They are absolute rubbish.  The plastic around the lugs melts so easily, and the lugs...just fall out!  Yeah, no good.

About the lavache: The clipping switch is very subtle, even with the diode sub as recommended by Brian on the project PDF. I have to concentrate to hear any difference.
Also used the 2n5088, had some trouble getting the 2n3565.  I find the top end of the overdrive with boost engaged is pretty raspy and have been leaving it turned off.

All that said, without the boost engaged, the tone sounds great.  Has a sort of, tweed, vintage sound. Very smooth.  Quite unique, and im glad i built it.  (tosses pedal over shoulder, lands on a towering pile behind him). "Ok, whats next" :)

I second this. I made that mistake once. Bought a bunch of them, and every single one melted instantly and the lugs fell right out. Such pieces of crap.

Looks freakin awesome! I wouldn't say its too messy inside. I will agree those Futurlec switches are flimsy. I ordered some not realizing and had an almost similar experience to you two. I was being really careful so none fell out but it was getting close! No bueno  :(

Thats a classy build.  I like the color of the enclosure.  It looks like a Worther's Original.  Mmmmmm.

Nice work! I like how you've managed to stuff all that into the enclosure. Looks like you used the Mammoth prepainted on this one. I love not having to paint

So you noticed the teethmarks? haha :) I know from now on, whenever i look at that pedal i'm going to start salivating..

Keysandguitars has got it in one.  Its a mammoth prepainted.  He'd know.  He sent it to me :)  thanks again mate!  For an extra 2 bucks, i think i'm going prepainted for most of my future builds.  Painting is just such a PITA...

Yeah, i hate painting.  I either get prepainted or bare metal.  I dont really care for any of the cosmetic stuff.  I just want to hurry up and play the damn thing.  Yours looks good though.  Worth the wait.

I really like the look of that. I also love buying pre-painted. I checked out the Mammoth website - they've got great prices for enclosures. I couldn't find a color that looks the "Werther's" that you have here. I suspect it just looks different on the website.

Can you tell me the name of that color?
Thanks!!

Hey Rowland,
Thats odd...you see, these were posted from a friend of mine in the US.  He's a member of MB forums "keysandguitar".  I'm sure he said they came from Mammoth...i can see other colors he sent me...maybe they have removed it?  I'll ask keysandguitar next time i speak to him.
Paul.

The color was "Cocoa Brown". I don't see it offered on the website which is too bad, it looks good. Maybe you could email them and see if they'll offer it again.
