Title: Plexi Legacy
Post by: k.rock! on July 19, 2011, 11:06:22 PM
Here's my Boneyard build for a friend of mine. I gotta say, I LOVE THIS PEDAL!

I'm gonna build one for myself and I think I'll stay with the same Plexi theme cause it turned out pretty cool!

Hope you guys like it :)

Kaleb, that is outstanding! In fact, quite a lot more attractive than the original. I think you should not give it to your friend and go find a Van Halen cover band to play in.

Looks sweet Kaleb. I actually had a similar design for my Boneyard before I decided to do a two in one with it and the AC Tone. Looks like it turned out great! You've got some lucky friends  ;D

Wow guys thank u all!! :D haha Brian I have thought of keeping the pedal for sure! I don't know about the VH cover band though lol Thanks for the hard work u put on this circuit. It was very worth it :)

The finish is a wrinkled matte black from PPP I had custom drilled. The graphics are white waterslide decals, it was my first time using them too. I always use clear. I messed up with the clear paint though :( It got a bit foggy because I used too much clear, but it's almost unnoticeable.

As soon as I get home I'll post the templates I used for it. I used Illustrator and Photoshop to do the graphics. I will post the psd files with layers and also the layout used to figure out the inside/outside layout. Really useful to plan your pedal :)

Thanks again!

Thanks man! I do wanna record a demo but I wanna do it properly. I don't have a good camera (just my iPhone) :(

I have a line 6 pod x3 and garageband though...so I'm thinking I can use that to record something half-way decent heh...

Here's the links for some files I used. I thought I had individual layers on them, but it seems like I combined everything. Anyways, here they are!

Thanks very much guys! :D

Yeah, it's a 1790NS enclosure. I think that size enclosure is about the smallest you can go to save room on your pedalboard, but also you're able to stomp each switch comfortably. Plus it has plenty of room to do a good layout inside and out. ;)  So bottom line for me, 1790NS is the enclosure to use with this project.

So I have a quick question for you guys. I was playing this pedal last night and I used a Tele and a Les Paul. Both sounded incredible with the bridge pickups. However, when using both pickups with the Tele or LP, I can hear a subtle but noticeable high frequency whine over the sound. It's not something crazy though, I can easily fix it rolling off the tone knob a little bit, but it is somewhat annoying that I would have to do this.

Now, I've read a few people having issues with MAX1044 "whine". Is this the same issue? I have the MAX1044A from SB. Would changing this IC fix this issue, or should I look into increasing or decreasing one of the ceramic caps in the circuit?

(I'm aware I'm under Build Reports, but if becomes a tech help conversation I'll move the conversation out of here :))

Thanks guys!

Try jumpering pin 8 V+ to pin 1 boost.  It may move the high pitched whine out of the audio band.

Wait...wouldn't that bypass my tone and volume though? Cause looking at the schematic, if I place a jumper between 1 and 8 I will be basically shorting a bunch of things there... :-\

Not trying to disregard your suggestion, I'm just trying to make sense out of that suggestion :)

Kaleb,

I was talking about the 1044 IC  but I just looked at the boneyard schematic and pin 1 and 8 are already connected.  Sorry...

Woops!  :-[  haha my bad...I messed up looking at the wrong chip. It's ok man, thanks for clearing it up though :)

If you or anybody else have another suggestion let me know!

Edit: I went ahead and posted into the Tech Help section so if anybody has a suggestion, please go here: http://www.madbeanpedals.com/forum/index.php?topic=2290.0

I totally missed this! It looks soo good! I'm in total awe, the end product is really fantastic. And your wiring inside has improved tons. I can understand not wanting to let this one go.
As I see more people get the waterslide decals down I'm reminded that's something I need to revisit. Great job!! :)

haha thanks man!  :D I honestly don't want to give it back...but I'll be placing an order for a boneyard soon and hopefully making the same one. It was a lot of fun to build it, so I can't wait to do it again! hehe

If I didn't have a Keeley Modded DS-1 that sounds incredibly like a Marshall full stack, I would gas for a boneyard haard.

I'm the guy who owns this pedal now. It's astounding and I'll be using it on my new album. Can anyone give me some history behind how this pedal came to life? Other than this site and the video posted, I can find nothing about it's origins.

It's an adaptation of the Carl Martin Plexitone.  And, yes, it rules.  Kaleb's build is just fantastic, too.

:o Whoa! I kept wondering where this pedal ended up since I know George sold it to someone...this is awesome!! haha

I'm glad it still works and you're digging it! If you have any problems with it at all, just send me a PM here and I'll take care of it. If you plan on selling it let me know too cause I would probably buy it back from you :P I loved that pedal...

Post some clips of your recording when they're done so we can hear it in action!
