Can I sub a 1n4004 for D1?
I've got only 2 1n4001, but I've got a bunch of 4004's laying around.

you absolutely can use a 1n4004

You might have to file its leads down so they fit through the holes in the board, but it'll work just fine.

I remember seeing that you can sub anything between 1n4002-1n4007 for the 1n4001 without problems but I've never tried it.
