Title: Some competitions are just awesome!
Post by: micromegas on March 23, 2015, 11:20:44 PM
Spain is a mixture of different cultures. Here you can find different landscaps and characters living next to each other and it is not such a big country. We have 4 different oficial languages and a ton of dialects.

I live next to Basque Country, they speak spanish and euskera there and have awesome competitions/sports.
Here you can appreciate a small sample:

Sorry for the tourism advertising words :). I just saw this and seemed awesome to me: a car! with an axe! cmmon....

I thougt it could be cool if we shared some similar absurd/awesome competitions here.

We have a really, really worthy competition here in God's Own.

New Zealand's Best Pie.

http://www.nzbakels.co.nz/pie_awards.cfm (http://www.nzbakels.co.nz/pie_awards.cfm)

Oh, for Americans -- by pie, Kiwi's mean flakey pastry containing piping hot goodness inside, normally NOT fruit. So common that most petrol stations and dairy's have a pie warmer going during business hours.

In some of the more rural parts of the country they like to have fun using milk cans and carbide

On new years day people like to take a swim in the ice cold waters of the North Sea

They have actual competitions for people who can sit the longest on a pole. Like literally for days

For the gross out factor there is our national delicacy, eating raw herring. With onions! Mmmmm. I don't think she likes it much though.

haha, I love the Netherlands.

Herring is delicious btw. My region is famous for its anchovies, outsiders think they are gross too as they sometimes look like worms:

But I can tell you those are awesome too :)

Hmmm, we don't do anything weird in Yorkshire. It's all fields and prettiness. We're good at beer and pie though. There's the ferret thing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferret-legging) I suppose, but we don't talk about that.

I love the quote on wikipedia where they show you a ferret's teeth and say: "Despite their sharp teeth, ferrets have been called "generally ... harmless, fun-loving creatures" by people associated with the sport" English humour at its finest

I've never been to England but my girlfriend has told me to beware of english pies. She says: "you can call it whatever you want, but hot rhubarb with cream and cold ice cream isn't a pie".

She didn't said anything about beer though. And my experience with Kentish and Oxonian beer has been great so far

That's Rhubarb Crumble, that's not a pie. Steak and Ale Pie, that's a pie, and yes it has warm beer in it, hence the ale ;)

TBH I find the warm beer (when not in pies) to be bloody awful. My personal favourites are usually Belgian beers.

I'll check that ale pie, the only beer-based food I've ever tried is the guiness cake and it was brilliant.
In Spain we're more used to sweet pies and call the salad ones "empanadas" but I think those are a little different from yours (at least they have less stuff inside and use to be flatter)

I dig Belgian beers the most too. They have great variety there. There's a beer shop 200 m from my home that has great material so every weekend I allow myself to try different things.

Steak and ale pie is mega.

So is guiness cake.

I'm seeing a pattern here...

This is making me hungry. It's one of those things I miss about living in England, those great pub pies.

Have a guitarist friend who lives in the States, but is originally from around here. So 2-3 times a year he comes back to visit family. He almost always nips in and we always go to the pub so he can have a proper pie and a pint.

Last time he was here as we mentioned that surely with all the micro breweries in the States he must be able to find some good beer? He responded that he went to a beer thing thinking that, and he complained that they're always putting extra 'stuff' in their beer, chocolate beer was one he remembered. "Who wants beer that tastes of chocolate?!".

Amused me anyhow.

Lately it seems we just keep putting in more hops. But I kind of like it. I'm in an IPA phase. Chocolate? Not so much.

Chocolate beer, banana beer, etc.... the Belgians invented that :)

Americans have good beer too (you can ask Forrest). I went all american last week and tried some "Sierra Nevada" and an "Anderson Valley" stout and they were really good.

Totally agree

While I like IPA, it's taken over a bit too much IMO. When you go to a bar with 50 beers on tap and half of them are some form of IPA (APA, DIPA, etc.) that's just too much.

I don't care for the chocolate stuff. That said, one trend that is happening that I do like is pepper beer (Habanero, Jalapeno, etc.) because everything made spicy is better....hehe.

All that talk of English pies reminds me why British cuisine still has the same reputation as German humor.

This is very true. But British pub food is 2nd to none.

I'm skeptical about the culinary qualities of food being served in bars. Not just in the UK, but everywhere. If I want food, I go to a restaurant, not a bar. Food in restaurants, drinks in bars.

All this talk of British food however has given me a craving for a curry though. We do have some Indian restaurants over here, but nothing on the scale and variety as you guys. Or fish and chips.

I think the first Chocolate beer I ever had was from Youngs, so the U.S. aren't the only wankers throwing goofy stuff in beer.

The U.S. microbreweries do seem to focus on trying to put the absolute worst stuff in beer, however.  I think it's Rogue that makes horrific beers such as "Bacon and maple" and "chocolate peanut butter horror" or something like that.  Both are ridiculously awful.

I like a good IPA as well, but the whole "hammer em with hops" thing has gotten a bit silly, too.  There are still some fantastic Ales and Stouts coming out of England.  I'm a huge fan of Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout, but I suspect the stuff we get here pales in comparison to what's over in the UK.

The NZ tendency with craft beer is to kill people with hops, or try to. One theory I heard is that it is a backlash against all those years of Double Brown, DB Draught, and Tui.

I'm a sucker for Trappist beer, or brown and amber ales, or dopplebock... but don't amuse strange flavored beers (although I like some lambics I've tried).

here you have an article about hypster beer  ;D

I'd try those though... don't know much about breakfast beer but some about beer for breakfast.

Do like Westmalle Dubel, that's one of my favourites. Only Lambic that I've found that I like is Oude Kriek which is bloody gorgeous, but very, very expensive to get here. Otherwise on a hot day, Maes Pils. Just give me a cold crate of that and I'm a happy chappy.

If I find myself in Belgium I'll always come back with stocks of Westmalle and Maes (and a couple of huge boxes of Lionadas chocolate also).

Oh and when in Austria/Germany, Ein gross weissbeer bitte! ;) (I can order beer and fuel in about 5 languages). Love that stuff. The closest thing we get to that here is Hoegaarden, but it wasn't as nice as Pauliner that seemed to be what everyone had on our last trip.

It is indeed! I actually prefer it to franciskaner.
My prefered german beer at this moment is this one: Hirschbräu Doppel-Hirsch. It has won a world cup award, but better than that, it has won "my" award :). If you can find it, try it.

A friend of mine who lives in Belgium just recommended me the Waterloo dark beer. I think I'll try that one this weekend.

Forgot to say I have a beer tasting this Friday. It was a gift, but for 20 euros is cheaper than going to the pub and you get some food too.

(I know this sound hyper-hypster, but meh, I don't care. It is beer. And I'm gonna leave my rimmed glasses and moustache at home anyway)

I usually leave beer for fridays. Saying that, the good thing about Spain and our catholic heritage is that I'm sure every friday you have some festivity to celebrate according to the liturgical calendar.   ;)

I recently had to quit drinking due to my liver enzymes being through the roof after getting some blood work done.

I never really thought I had an issue (famous words of a drunk) because I didn't drink a ton, I just drank often. I usually enjoyed wine at the end of the evening. One glass or two glasses maybe three....whatever...

I guess after 14 years of doing that, it finally added up.

After a month and a half of not drinking, I am going in today to pick up my results from blood work done last Friday . Hopefully everything will be back to normal.

nah, no worries. I think I will still be able to drink again just not as frequent as before. I just wanted to get away from it for a while to make sure things go back to normal. From what I know now is....the liver needs a break and even though I wasn't a binge drinker, getting wasted, etc., just the frequent drinking never gave my liver the break that it needed. It was just so nice to have those drinks to wind down in the evening. It felt more like a ritual for me than a habit/addiction. As soon as I got my blood work scare, I quit that day and it's been six weeks since.

I hope to still enjoy wine and beer on occasion but I won't do it if it's going to impact my health.

Yep, same for me (and dairy) too. Been off it for over 12 months now. Not a big deal to be honest (I have an anti-addictive personality if there is such a thing).

Though I occasionally miss it and will get a six pack in. But I can make that last weeks now.
