Title: Help me choose a photocell for the Harbinger
Post by: Cortexturizer on September 23, 2014, 07:28:00 PM
While I am waiting for the board to arrive, I thought I'd look at some photocells at Banzai's site. I went nuts after looking at the caps on the smallbear's site so I thought I'd just order from my good ol Banzai friends. So this is the photocell list that they are offering:

Also, they have this bulb - http://www.banzaimusic.com/Bulb-12V-20mA.html , which I'm guessing is fine, but it does have a lower power designation of 20mA as opposed to the one at smallbear that is 40mA, is this a deal breaker?

The one they label as "perfect for the Univibe" is so far off on the dark resistance that I'm really not sure how they came to the conclusion that it was the right part. It might sound okay, but it's not going to have a great switching range, though you could remove the resistors that are in parallel and have better dark resistance.

If you can stand ordering from Smallbear, they sell one that they had manufactured specifically for vintage vibes. http://www.smallbearelec.com/servlet/Detail?no=1580

So I am not crazy after all, those are totally out of spec, really weird that the Banzai guys put those and labeled em like that...
No, the smallbear si fine, don't get me too serious but I found their capacitor offer weird and hard to handle so I quickly turned back to what I am used to I guess.
Will probably just order from them, what the heck...

I used these with great results on a Neovibe.

Anybody have the link for the photocells on smallbears site? I tried the links in this discussion but no luck.  It's for a harbinger build, thanks

Thanks Jon, I'm gonna go with the top one. I couldn't remember which one smallbear was saying would be good for the vibe, pretty sure it was that one.  There is also another one with the same specs but "TO-5", would that one be better or worse?

Doh! After reading some more I see one is hermetically sealed and the other isn't.  I think the TO-5 looks cooler 😄

I went with the small bear ones top of the line 375 a piece and they are better than the nsl7532 imho much better. Deeper lush phasing

^ I did too, but I went with the $2.75 ones.  It sounds great, but I've never tried the 7532's so I don't really have anything to compare it to.
