Title: Your favorite geetars?
Post by: sprayfe on May 03, 2011, 10:32:14 PM
I'm a tele addict. Have been since the beginning.
These are a few I've built.
what's in your stable?

Nice. I'm a strat man who is also partial to prs guitars. I've had several of each over the years. my faves are a '78 maple necked strat and a prs singlecut. I've got a stable of Ibanez jems as well.

almost forgot this one:(http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j471/cjkbug/P1030716.jpg)

this was total one off custom built to my specs by Bill Jancar at the first act custom shop in Boston,MA it's got and alder body, fender 251/2"scale set neck w- 24 jumbo frets, seymour duncan custom shop p-90's, surf green nitro and custom "good faith" inlay. good faith was the name a tattoo shop I owned in boston at the time it was built. that guitar is amazing. It doesnt get played nearly enough

my favorite is a strat w/ lace sensor gold in the neck, but I've also got an ESP/LTD Viper 50 with a Phat Cat in the neck. I'd been gas-ing for a jazzmaster until I played one and a tele right after. Right now, I'm planning on getting a thinline Rondo tele and modding it into a 72 thinline

Telecasters for sure. Just something about a really chunky tele neck and a maple freboard going into a "string through the ash body" bridge. Sounds ridiculously good. I also have about 4 strats laying around, most of them in pieces waiting to have work done. I play my Ibanez prestige sometimes but the buckers just seem too extreme and lack the articulation of singles, definitely doesn't get as much love despite being a better playing instrument than just about anything else I have ever tried.

I like my Epi Dot best right now, and would love to have a really Gibson 335 if I could.

I'm intrigued by tele's lately, and if I were to choose a new type of guitar to have, I'd buy a good tele I think.

I really like my Tele, but im unsure if im completely happy with the noiseless pu's. Plays very nicely though.
Its an American Deluxe exactly like:
alder body with maple neck in that colour with white binding.

Although at the moment im gasing for a really nice sunburst or goldtop Gibson LP for some humbucker action.

I'm also an Ibanez lover.  My JS1000 signed by Joe Satriani is one of my prized possessions.  My 1987 Ibanez RG550 (desert yellow! brighter than the sun) plays like a dream too.

I have been playing more hard tail recently though, loving my G&L Tribute Invader and Tribute ASAT special (really recommend the G&L Tribute line, such a great value).  My Music Man Axis and Dillion DR500 (PRS knockoff) get less play these days.

I am a Classicist. For gigs I use a Les Paul and a Strat, with occasional swapping in a SG and a beautiful Inca Silver Warmoth Tele I built. Can't go wrong with the fundamentals.

I am gassing for a Jazzmaster also! I blame Nels!

My favorite is my '92 PRS Custom 24 that I've had since '96.  In 2008 the factory did fret job and installed 57/08s.  It's pretty hot.  The '96 335 is a close second.  The '67 SG is only kept around because I bought it for $100 when I was 16 (1996).

This is a tasty 1996 Limited Edition Les Paul Standard that I picked up from a bud in Cali.

I also have a 1964 Fender Duo Sonic II and a couple acoustics (Larrivee and Takamine).

My favourite has a bit of a Tele in the genes (bodyshape) and a bit of Strat (neck+middle PU and headstockshape) and a bit of Les Paul (bridge and humbucker, angled headstock, electrics from rear)... Somewhat of a unique bastard and I love her...
Made out of a single slab of Matai (NZ hardwood) with Ebony fretboard.

She's a home birth.... this is how it started and the 'pregnancy' until it was all done was a few month as well from the memory...
By the number of year rings in timber the tree has been around in NZ before "James Cook and the Endeveaours" were here for their famous NZ tour. ;D

i had one of these. it was an awesome guitar. I traded it of for a mesa nomad 100. I think I got the beter end of the deal. but I wouldn't mind replacing it with anther tele.

Much like I can't leave well alone with the pedals, much the same goes for the guitars...

The Gaffer

Ibanez NDM-1. Got it for next to nothing from ebay. Plays really nicely if it is a little tonally dead. This along with the other NDM are my main experimental guitars, I chop and change them a lot! This on has an A2 Seymour Tele bridge pup, a A2 Pro Strat middle and a GFS retrotron-a-like bridge. They actually all sound pretty good together. Wiring is via a super-switch. A 3 individual pups on 1-3-5, can't remember what on the other two... I just went with what combinations sounded best.

The Table

My other. Stripped of it's gaffer tape and really buggered around with over the years. As it stands now it has a pair of Seymour P-Rails in it and the bridge pup out of my Strat shoved between them. The P-Rails are really rather good. They're a P90's and a single coil rail per pup, and a really rather good one. Very versitile. Mad wiring on this guitar to accomodate that. Individual pup switching and both the vol and tone pots are push pull to change the mode of the P-Rails. (both down is humbucking in series, tone pulled is P90s, vol pulled is rails, both pulled is humbucking in parallel). Almost forgot to mention, both the NDMs have Sperzel tuners as the standard ones in them were cheap tat (much like the electronics they came with).

The Strat

A MIM Classic 50s Strat. Loved it apart from the bridge pup which was horrible. I suspect all three pups are actually the same, it just doesn't work in the bridge. Middle and neck are lovely though. I swapped the bridge pup out with a BKP Sinner. It's a mad, mad output thing that has all the power of a humbucker, but is still a single coil and sounds stratty. It's bonkers and strangely matches with the other two. The bridge pup ended up in The Table.

Soapy

A PRS SE Soapbar II. Another ebay bargain that came loaded with a pair of BKP-91 pups (and started me on a bit of a BKP love-in). It sounds so, so much better than it's price-tag and construction might suggest. Indeed I consider this one of the best sounding guitars I've ever heard. The other mods include a set of Grover locking tuners (which are a pain to be fair and I must get around to replacing them with stock Grovers) and a TonePros locking intonateable bridge, which is marvellous. Love this thing and will never part with it.

Eddy

An Edwards LP92-LTS (or something like that). Essentially a LP rep from ESP in Japan and it's brilliant. I had one before and foolishly sold it. Managed to snag another for sensible money. They come with a JB/59 set in them as standard. Which I just didn't like. Back-to-back with Marauders VOS 52 they sounded nothing alike (I know, there's a bit of price differencs going on here). So I dropped in a pair of BKP Mules and the sonic gap closed considerably, they certainly sound closely related now. The VOS kicks it's arse in many other areas mind you, as you would expect costing 4 times the price.

The White Snake

An LTD Viper 400. Call me tarty, but I had a cherry Viper and always wanted a white one with the matching headstock (that are incredibly rare). One came up and I had to have it. Thinner than my original but strangely even more heavy sounding. I ripped out the EMGs and it got a BKP Miracle Man set from ebay. The bridge pickup is just monsterous and perfect in this axe. The neck isn't. It's just flat. I've got a matching Cold Sweat neck on the way which should make it sparkle a bit more.

Talking of things on the way, the only thing I feel I'm missing is a Telecaster. I've got a Classic Player Baja Tele on the way from a BKP forum member once he sorts out delivery. Looking forward to that!

Yeah...I've been through hundreds...literally.  These are the ones that have stayed.  The PRS has been there from the beginning.  My dad co-signed a loan for me when I was 16 to get that guitar.

My Larrivee is an OMV-05.  It's the best acoustic I've ever played.

That's a cool build, gobstopper.  I'm not a strat fan, at all, but I like the look of that build.  I'd like to see that build with a P-90 in the neck and a bucker in the bridge.  That'd be HOTTTTTT!

I have a '77 Les Paul Double Cutaway with P90's that I just love.  Also a '67 Melody Maker (SG Shaped) that was routed for humbuckers.  I had a friend at PRS refinish it SG Cherry for me.  On the bass side there will always only be the '78 Rick 4001.

Hell, I thought nobody would start a thread like this  :D

Man, I´m getting jealous on you guys!!!!

here are my babes:

All of them, mounted to my wall

My first "parts-caster" (the neck is a 20-year-old ESP neck, which I bought in 1991)
It´s got a LR Baggs piezo bridge, for that acoustic vibe. Alder body, Haeussel pus, ESP tuners

the 2nd one (construction and paint myself, parts bought on the web), ash body with double natural binding, flame maple top and bottom, SD antiquity pus, flame maple neck / rosewood fingerboard, Schaller bridge

the 3rd one (construction and paint myself, parts bought on the web), mahagony body with flame maple top, natural binding, David Barfuss handwound pus, flame maple neck with zebrawood fingerboard, Fender MIM bridge, Schaller tuners

my favourite 96 Hamer, I bought used (I instantly fell in love with that one!)

my latest add-on (actually the first one, I left untouched.......so far....  ;)

whats missing is a Epiphone Firebird, a Yamaha acoustic (the first guitar, bought about 26 years ago) and another Hamer (made in Korea, bought around 1994).

i don't have any pictures but I have a '03 Highway 1 Tele in Transparent Yellow/Blonde.  I swapped the pickups for SD 5-2s with a 4 way switch as well as a pearl pickguard.  Maple neck/fretboard.

I am planning a few tele builds for the future.  A Cabronita style guitar as well as a Tele Hybrid Semi-Hollow with a Hum/lil '59 combo for thick sounds.

I also have a Taylor 214e which is my workhorse acoustic.  Would like to get one of those 8 string Baritone Taylors though.

Definitely some nice stuff. I'm glad to see those Edwards guitars! Those are real beauties. I've got a few ladies of my own all I cherish very much. The first one is an MIJ 1994 Strat. Its based on an old model i'm guessing 50's from the single ply pickguard. Plays like a charm and gives me more treble than I could ask for. After that I picked up a late 90's Gibson SG. Upgraded pickups of some sort done by the previous owner. Now those two seem to sit in their case more since I've got the most recent two. The first one is an Electra 2242 black Les Paul. It weighs a ton, plays like any real Les Paul I've ever played. It's got an awesome peace symbol on the headstock below the electra logo and wavy headstock rather than the typical open book style. The most recent is a Lotus Les Paul also black. Got it on craigslist for $120 and it was such a deal. I'm trying to get another one thats up right now I like it soo much. It plays amazingly, sounds huge, down-tuning is even more massive and the price was a full-on steal! I'll have to take some pictures with it and a sound clip too!  ;D

Here's another one I love dearly... polygamy is fairly accepted and widespread when it's about guitars and gear in general.
Ain't that right guys....?!?

It actually seems to be 'the norm' judging by everyone's previous posts... ;D

She's born in the backyard too (it's a fertile place, even though things are taking time to come together), bodyshape and size is close to a Les Paul, half-acoustic construction similar to a ES 335 with solid maple core, birdseye maple top, sides mahagony, back brazilian rosewood, neck is padouk with barzilian rosewood fretboard.
Pickups are a mini humbucker taken from a Les Paul on neck (I got the cover goldplated... costly...) and a DiMarzio PAF pro on bridge.

No other around like her... and she's called 'Jazzica'.

I've done a Warmoth build.  The guitar in my avatar is a Warmoth.  Went together without a hitch.  Plays nice, sounds awesome!

Korina body, Wenge neck, Macassar ebony fretboard.  Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell in the bridge, Chopper in the neck.  (it has GFS single coils in it right now, though)  Sperzel tuners, Wilkinson trem, stainless frets.  Love it!

Ive got a couple of builds with Warmoth necks. They're great quality. The compound radius takes a while to get used to. I had maple fretboards on both of them and sanding between frets is a nightmare, also removing the lacquer from the frets can be a PITA. I got stainless steel frets for both of them and there is no sign of wear at all (on vintage/thin frets). I did a lot of work on my buddies strat a few days ago and he had a mighty mite neck which was surprisingly level (more so than both of my Warmoth necks), he said he bought it for $90! I have to get me one of those.

Laquer on the frets???

You mean, they install the frets first...and then spray some paint on the neck?????  ???
That´s quite shitty for the money they take, isn´t it?
I hope, I got it right  ;)

@JeffdaMaori

Man, these are nice builds! Where do you get your wood / skills from?
Any special workshop equipment (especially the plexiglas templates)?

I like these "one-piece" constructions!
:o thumbs-up

carsten

Cheers Carsten, there's an amazing amount of skill and cleverness all over this forum.

I'm just doing stuff myself, not trained in any wood or electronics trade.

Apparently I have been mucking around with things all my life, my parents said that I was hammering nails into tree huts before I could walk and figured out nasty contraptions to make them "predator proof" (as in keeping the neighbouring gang out....).

The tools that I've used to build guitars are often stupefying simple and not specialized; the 'fanciest' machine being my trusty cheapy 'Ryobi' router.
The plexiglas template is just that: a piece of plexiglass that I cut out to guide the router to create cavities for the pickups.
If you have a router it will have a guide, template will need to be 3mm or so bigger than cut you wanna make and away you go. Takes a bit of trial cutting on off-cuts to determine the fit (photo is of trialing and fine tuning a strat template), but you definitly don't need to buy something like that.

Scratch your brain and you can figure out how it works, throw a bit of number eight wire (very NZ saying....) technology in and think about everything twice and trial it out before you do that stuff.

The wood for the half-acoustic (which by the way has a bolt-on neck because I wanted to try different necks on it to settle for this) I got from a violin maker, took a bit of arm-twisting to convince him to let go.

The mahagony sides I bent into shape after dampening them over a chunky piece of round scrap metal pipe that I got from the dump, heated it up with a camping stove... there goes your bending iron.... cost about $3 for the scrap metal.

If you buy all those specialized shiny looking tools from places like 'stewmac' (goggle them) you'll be spending US $ 5000 + before you even start... that's goofy....!!! :P

The only specialized tool I ever bought was a fret slot saw and a soft blow hammer to fit in frets.

Everything else I have in my shed as normal run off the mill handyman tools (jigsaw, router, cordless drill, files, sandparer etc...).
It takes a lot of elbow grease (sanding etc...) but it saves going to the gym.

The one piece guitar was an extremely unusual / fortunate find as the slab of wood really asked for it... I've been always thinking about trying to do that but it definitly needs the right big piece of wood and there's a lot of offcut.
Maintenance wise a bolt on neck is the more sensible way (that's why Leo did that in the first place...) but we don't always have to be sensible...

Hi JeffdaMaori,
I know what you´re talking about:
I lately used my Dremel, to make some routing stuff, because the delivered neck was a little bit "bigger" than the promised Fender standard ;)

It was just, I read so much about these routing templates, bought some books, while on vacation n the US (well, never expect to find these books in germany....come on....no, you won´t find them!), but I never was tough enough to built some templates. Which tools do you use, to route the templates?

u see, I´m building guitars, while just putting things together, but I never built a guitar from scratch. Although StewMac is quite expensive, they are very helpful and reliable (that has to be said).

Enough said, I think I will give it a try  ;)

Back in the cellar...

Hi Carsten,
I use a Dremel to cut and shape the plexiglass templates, but for the actual routing in guitar body I use a Ryobi router, a bit more grunty and the weight of the machine steadies it a bit more than the Dremel which is good for intricate smaller stuff like inlays.

Photo is of routing cavity for trussrod with router.

Stewmac is good and I'm happy that they're there, don't get me wrong.
I've ordered some stuff from them before like fretwire, slot saw etc. and it worked all well, the ideas they give are great.
I just think they overspin the salespitch that you need all those fancy gadgets that they come up with otherwise your build is not professional or doomed or doesn't have enough Dan Erlwine mojo or so...
And some of their stuff is incredibly overpriced (check out their price for 3PDT stompswitch....) whereas some other stuff is reasonable.

Back to the shed....

Wow, some of you guys have some sick collections!
Here are the 3 main guitars that I play most often.

Parker single cut, made overseas.  This has one of the limited finishes I think they called it honey maple burl or something.  Reminds me of an sg, and the coil taps can get a reasonable tele sound, so it is pretty versatile.  I put Sperzels and a Graphtech Resomax bridge on it a while back.  It's pretty good.

Hamer USA Daytona, handmade in '94 I think.  Nice axe, but the southern ash body weighs.  You can't see the transparent blue finish in this pic, but it's a looker.

Breedlove Jumbo.  Got a good deal on it.  It's not bad, but I could do without all the abalone.  :P

Ive got a couple of builds with Warmoth necks. They're great quality. The compound radius takes a while to get used to. I had maple fretboards on both of them and sanding between frets is a nightmare, also removing the lacquer from the frets can be a PITA. I'm afraid they do come with the frets laquered. that is just how it's done. you have to spray them after fretting or you'll fill the fret slots with laquer. and you'l crack the finish when you press the frets in.

Is that LP in the middle a Warmoth build?.. because I like it.  8)

Thanks :)

That's a Warmoth neck.  It's an old Gibson Sonex.  I broke the original neck back in high school when I accidentally tipped it over.  About 20 years later I completely re-did it.  Warmoth neck (bird's eye maple, pau ferro fret board, SS frets), Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P-90's, Tonepros bridge, Sperzel tuners.

I painted it using the Paint Your Own Guitar (http://www.paintyourownguitar.com/) method.  Which is just spray painting, BTW.   :D

Ha!  ;D

I'd like to build a Warmoth SG style guitar. How does the Brazilian iron wood fretboard feel? I prefer ebony, but I'd consider using the pau ferro if it is dense and tightly grained like ebony.

Ok, you´d crack the finish....but, to be honest: they charge about 270 bucks for a laquered, simple vintage strat neck (maple / rswd), add some shipping charges and you´re way up to 300. I´d really expect, to get a straight, playable neck. And not some kind of:"...well, almost done, but you´ll have to clean the laquer from the frets (we´d do it...for some extra fees...). They got some nice bodies an necks, but after that, I´d never buy a neck at Warmoth...seriously!

Don´t take me for granted, but at a certain amount of money (at Warmoth or any other seller), i´d really expect, to get some "clean" stuff, instead of "kind-of-playable".
Sorry, my opinion.

I really thought, you´re kiddin me.... ;)

"almost done" is quite right. warmoth states that all necks require finall fret leveling and polishing as, which is where the laquer would come off, quite easily I might add.

I think the Pau is more like rosewood than ebony.  I prefer the feel of ebony, too.

Finding one that is actually working properly is a chore.  I got lucky with mine.  I still like my ep-4 a little better for tape echo's though.  I use both sparingly.  The drive motor for the re-201 is no longer made and there is no substitute available except a donor motor from another unit.

Woah didn't realize they stopped making the motor! That is gonna be hell to fix now as if aligning the tape heads isn't hell already! You got the best of both worlds w/ both units. When I was working in this studio before, one of the guys had some crazy rare echoplex. I've never seen anything like it and I'm not seeing much info with a quick search but I did find a picture! http://www.jyuenger.com/?p=82

EDIT: I take that back. It's called an EM-1 and its a multi-channel echo unit from the 70's. This thing is cool!

If I remember correct, it's been a while, around $500?  I also just saw an re-301 go up on CL .  It quickly vanished but It was priced to high for my taste ($750).  I live in kind of a central area where Philadelphia and New York are not out of driving range.  There are a lot of small studios that have been selling all their stuff.  I scour numerous cities with an app on my iphone.  The best deals are the ones no one else saw first  ;)  Most of my non DIY gear is from CL.  I've made out really well because I'm persistent at checking but patient for the right deal.  Most times the seller is willing to take a loss just to move the equipment in today's economy.  Some people facebook, I craigslist...  I don't purchase a lot but when I do it's a good deal.  I'm also extra careful when dealing. There are some shady people out there.

That is the exact same way I've acquired so much Sunn equipment. That Iphone App must make it much easier though! I'm gonna start looking for some old test equipment. I've met my fair amount of shady CL users and I'm actually still trying to get an old Sunn head working that I bought. I'll never give someone cash without verifing it turns on and works to some of its potential.

Eric Johnson Strat and an Epiphone Les Paul with a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in the bridge and a 59' in the neck (50's wiring harness pio caps). I also have a Jackson Js-1, my first guitar, though it stays locked up in the dungeon. Its kind of like a mitsubishi eclipse, it looks cool, but always breaks down.

Nice standard baritone! It looks just like one of the guitars used by Stephen O'Malley but he uses a Travis Bean guitar I believe. Of course he's drop-A baritone w/ .17 gauge custom string sizes. That is gonna be a one sick ass riffer! You must have been saving forever for one of these   :)

I have had these two Ibanez Icemans for over 20 years.

The first is a 1977 in "Midnight Olive" aka blackish green. I made the really stupid mistake of putting a Kahler trem on it in th early 80s. It seemed like a good idea at the time.

The second is 1978 in sunburst. I put Gibson pickups on it a couple years ago. The bridge pup is Burstbucker pro, and the neck is a P94.

These guitars are solid and play fantastic. They have played many gigs including my 2 year stint in a kiss cover band. I don't play them much these days as I recently bought a Gretsch Electromatic and am in lov ewith that.
