Title: Lend me your eyes - suggestions...
Post by: Willybomb on May 31, 2014, 10:34:32 AM
Gudday all.  Just finished wiring my Random Stranger Bass Preamp/DI.

It has the following, in effect order:

Mictestors Really Cheap Compressor on vero, from Freestompboxes.
Madbean Sprout, Haberdasher etch.
NE-1 bass preamp on vero, from Paul-in-the-lab's layout.
THC's Balanced line driver.

Everything works as advertised, but I'm getting some sort of faint noise with any of the effects on.  The XLR out with no effects on is dead quiet, and non of them on their own is too bad, but as soon as the sprout gets kicked on at the same time as the compressor, the noise gets really loud.  It's not like the oscilliation you get with a Hipster, and it's not particularly whiney... might have to post a sample.

Compressor + Preamp is pretty good.

But anyway, here's the gutshot.  Maybe I need to decouple that power strip that all the grounds and 9v feeds are coming off properly.  Any ideas?

Nice build... can't help with the issue, but curious to see how it is resolved.

Well, I've put the fuzz first in the chain, followed by the compressor, so that squeal is now fixed when those two are on together.  Still got some noise in there somewhere, so I'm going to decouple the power and see how that goes.

Filtering the DC power fixed it.  Put a 100r resistor in series on the +9v rail, and put a 100uf cap from that to ground.

I'm always fond of vero builds. Glad you got it working properly!
