Title: Bubba FET (complete)
Post by: jubal81 on October 31, 2013, 05:05:17 PM
Finally finished after a marathon over the weekend. Five FET drives in one box with a SHO to kick 'em in the arse. Lots of forum members' work in this one:
Fender: Blackbird - Chi-Boy
Dumble: Umble - TH_Custom
Roadrage - Madbean
VOX: Voxy Brown - moi
Plexi - Chi_Boy
Hiwatt - Prince Albert by Raul Duke
SHO - Poodle Pedals PCB

The switching system consists of three PCBs of my own design. The overall bypass (left most switch) and the SHO bypass (Right most switch) use the 57B relay microchip from Pedal Sync to control latching relays with optofet bypass to ground the signal during switching.
The middle switch (and PCB) uses a 4017 decade counter to switch between the relays for the individual circuits. There's a 40106 for switch debounce and power-on reset (thanks to Mictester) and a 2003ULC to sink the current from the relays and corresponding LEDs.

The faceplates are acid etched (and took forever - two tries - since I'm not so hot at etching). The Tweed and amp chassis came from Antique Electronic Supply and were generously covered with lacquer.

A whole lot of money and a whole lot of time, but it was definitely worth it. Sounds great and works beautifully. Thanks to everyone for their boards and advice.

The video below is only the second time I'd fired it up. Got to play with it for about 30 minutes before work yesterday. Hence me fumbling to try to do all the switching while playing two chords.

Holy Awesome.  That is one of the nicest builds I've ever seen.

There's an awful lot going on and it looks fantastic.  Well done all around.

Yes, it works... and it sounds really great! The switching system looks really nice too, I thought having six drives plus a boost would be a nightmare, but from what I can see it looks easy enough to select the fx you want.

Now THAT'S how you build a multi pedal! I'm pretty speechless, it's flawless in both design and execution.
Hard to say much else, except that whatever the amount of time and money it took was worth it. Congratulations!!

Wait...
...Can Hear that crashing sound? That's me throwing my soldering iron in the TRASH! lol

Un-freaking-believable. After that much time and effort, I am glad it works.
I too could not get the link to work...

I knew this was coming down the pipe, and it both met and exceeded my expectations. Certainly a contender for build of the year.

I'm most impressed with how clean it ended up internally when there is so much going on.

Now you don't need anymore dirt pedal projects.

Just kidding, there's ALWAYS a need for more dirt !

That is just too cool.

Really nice execution, and it looks stunning. Love the relay switching too. Great job!  One of the best multiple pedals in a box I have ever seen!

That is a spectacularly good idea, spectacularly well executed. Seriously, you should watch out for Behringer trying to make a ripoff of that thing.

You forgot to include a noise gate for those rare occasions when you turn em all on for a neverending solo :P

Absolutely stellar work man. Love it

All that switching going on and the wiring is soooo neat.  That is a work of art.  Truly a masterpiece.

Congrats!

Thanks for all the kind words, guys. It really means a lot after all I put into it.

Now that I've had a few weeks to play with it, I'm really appreciating how useful it actually is. I was worried that it might be a monstrosity of redundancy - like they'd all sound too similar or that I'd end up only using a favorite. However, there's a really big difference between them and they're all great and I find each inspiring in its own way, which is the best part - when something you build actually makes you feel creative.

Some follow up thoughts:
Blackbird: I REALLY love this one and highly recommend it. Easily the most versatile of them all. Low gain, high gain, even as just a boosted tone stack it can add a brilliant, thick charm.
Umble: This could easily be an always-on pedal. Really great as just a clean boost.
Voxy: Been using this as the high-gain option. Satisfying crunch. Can't wait until someone breaks down the new ACE30. Might be swapping out a circuit board before too long ;)
Plexi/RAH: Using these as medium-gain, each with it's own flavor.

I'm also getting spoiled by the soft-touch switches - feels so much smoother than a standard 3PDT.
I've also considered adding a power/headphone amp and some reverb to make a really sweet portable rig. Gonna keep rolling that idea around.

Yeah, I am starting to really like relay bypass as well.  The only real downside is the expense of it.

I've been meaning to add a headphone solution to my breadbox prototype setup.  I haven't really settled on a circuit I want to use for it though.  I have a handful of hi-fi headphone amps here but none of them sound right and are likely overkill for this application.  Have you settled on a headphone circuit you like?

I haven't liked the chip-amp ones I've tried. Someone posted a schematic from Douglas Self on FSB recently that uses discrete mosfets that has me intrigued.

A pocket pod may be a good, though non-DIY, option. You get some amp emulations to boot.
