Title: x0xb0x - TB303 Clone. Has anyone built this?
Post by: hagcel on July 24, 2013, 07:32:29 PM
Hey there,

I'm thinking of building a x0xb0x. It's a Roland TB-303 clone.

http://www.willzyx.com/products/x0xb0x-complete-black

And here is the build manual and links to mods that look pretty cool:

And a youtube demo:

It looks really cool and doesn't sound like it should be all that difficult after building and troubleshooting delays and flangers. Anyone have experience with it?

i have not built one, but these kits have been out on the market for several years now. i occasionally see used ones up for sale. i can't imagine they are that difficult to build if you take your time, however i could easily see some bugs pop up that might be a nightmare to catch based on the complexity of the thing.

i've been meaning to get around to building one of these things myself, i just haven't found the right time i suppose.

It looks like it could be a really cool build.

I'm thinking it might be worth it to have them solder and test the Ft232 chip. It would really suck to mess that up and I've never soldered a chip like that and always use sockets for the ICs in all my other builds.

$25 seems a little steep but better than messing it up

Last I looked there were a few chips in there that were tricky to get a hold of.

I have built a Shruthi, and I will say, its just awesome.

Yep - I've built two.  Sold one on eBay.  Still got the other..

jaidee - Did you solder the FT232 or have them do it?

aballen - I've seen those! They look really cool. How difficult was the Shruthi?

Shruthi was  pretty easy.  I built the one with the 4 pole filter, sounded amazing.  I sold it on eBay,  kind of wish I kept it but I needed the $$ at the time.

They have one now that's holds six filter boards for a true poly synth.  That a lot if $$ though.

Sorry for the belated response - I've overlooked the thread.

The first x0xb0x was made with parts individually sourced by me, save for a selection of "rare parts" put together by a guy in Australia.  I soldered the SMD parts without any issues.

The second x0xb0x was built using a kit produced by a very reliable Taiwanese guy called "willzyc" (or something similar - he has/had an official "seal of approval" from Adafruit to produce the kits and you will certainly find reference to him on the Adafruit forums), and I think I may have paid a bit extra to have the SMD part presoldered on that occasion.
