Klon(e) with Demo

Been building for a few years now and finally got around to building up one of these (but its not for me). My friend wanted an "authentic as possible" klon without the $1500 price tag so I only charged him $1400  ;)

Built this on Aion refractor pcb (great quality and build doc) and stuck to all stock specs. Went with 1n34a diodes with 35mv forward voltage.

The sound? Pretty nice actually when used as a boost, not so much as a stand-alone overdrive to my ears. When ran straight into my 5E3 Tweed it really makes it sing very nicely. However, I can't say I am sold and likely won't build one for myself. Anyway added a quick/crappy demo for the heck of it.

Nice strategic LED placement.  Really have to get around to finishing my Refractor.
The only known cure in the world for GAS is death.  That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Beat me to it!  Strategic placement of the LED for sure.  A jeweled LED for the "jewels."

Nice clean build, good materials (switchcraft jacks).  Looks great!  Maybe you should charge him $1450  ;D

Sorry... could someone point me to the link to the CRAPPY demo?  ::)

If that's crappy... they need to find a new term for my playing!

Sweet sounds and build bro!

Ah jeez thank you GL. Really I haven't been playing much (been to busy fixing guitars) so I feel every time I pick up a guitar to play I get worse  :(

Anyway I declared it "crappy" because it was one take and done quickly so not to expect much.  It did feel nice to push that 5E3 Tweed  :)

Why won't you make one for yourself pryde? What do you think is lacking to the tone?

The only pedal I would ever fanatically defend is a fuzz face hehe so I'm not trying to pick on ya for not liking the Klon that much, I am just curious.

There is a happy sort of error that I did to my Sunking that made it sound much better than builds built per build doc. I might just reveal that error to the rest of you guys when I get the time. Since I am a home etcher (at least I was until one of Brians boards spoiled me infinitely) I made a mistake on my homebrew Sunking board that I wasn't aware of. It was a trace that had a break but I did not know that at the time.
When lot's of people tried my sunking they loved it very much,it has been described the best clone that they ever heard.
I ended up making one for my friend, and you can imagine the terror of it not sounding remotely similar. Then I audio probed the two circuits for days until I realized what I had done. I made the cut on the board and instantly they were totaly the same sounding pedals. It is much brighter mind you, and has much more gain. But it gets more ampy so to say, much crazier when gain on max. Try the clip from my soundcloud (in the signature) and you will see what I mean, you can feel the chug of the chords. That was a squier classic vibe strat, on the bridge pickup (disconnected from the tone pot as they come) and the Tone on the sunking is on ZERO. I had to set it like that due to the extreme treble from the pickup.

wow cortex I did have a listen to yours and it is much more gainy and rich sounding. I dig it! If you share your secrets I may need to reconsider building one for myself

The main reason I was not "sold" on the Centaur is because I feel there are several boosts that sound as good if not better into my little 5E3 Tweed (the simple AMZ boost for example just kills). If I could get a Centaur that also makes a good, unique stand-alone OD then we are talking. I do have a kingslayer to build at some point as well.

BTW: love all your soundcloud demos!

Give me a couple of days cause the pedal is on my board in the rehearsing room. It's not a secret really, I just made a happy accident I guess with mine. It sounds incredible with humbuckers as well, I was particularly sold after playing it on the neck pickup, it just worked better than all the others. If I recall correctly it was something about some capacitor that I accidentally disconnected but I never looked it up on the schematic it might be a little more involved than just that.
I remember that when I built the pedal for the friend I wasn't really impressed it was just like a tube screamer just a bit different, I couldn't get the gain I wanted nor the glassiness I could with my pedal. The "mod" changed it all. I do not claim that I have the magical mod or anything but it just sounds much better.
As I said, it might be too bright for some people, and it does put an emphasis on upper mids rather on the lower mids I think. If it had more bass, I think it would be the perfect amp in a box for me. I thought changing some caps to give it a little more bass but I am not completely convinced I need it, I love it the way it is.
Just give me a few days, I might even do a demo of both variants.

great looking build and demo

my wife loves her kingslayer .....to be honest it is really a high fi sounding overdrive
but until i find 1 that has  a bass knob it would be hard to find a spot on the board for me (half our set is me playing a baritone)

great overdrive just dont get the hype maybe im missing something

There is a way to alter the bass contour of the Kingslayer.  I did it on mine, and if you like, I will post instructions later.  Here is a link to the build, if I may be so bold: http://bit.ly/1cAfUUL

Cortexturizer, count me in on wanting to see the happy accident :D

It is, but I will have to wait to get home to post it.  It's based off the GuitarPCB Fat switch, but pot-mounted.

Sorry to derail the thread; the variable bass control is located here.
